You won't settle on it right away. I suggest you go cheap with one of these, unless you earn a lot then it's up to you to go all the way but be prepared to lose value especially for certain styles.
Dress watch - Orient Bambino
Dive watch - Seiko SKX007 or Seiko Sea Urchin
Pilot watch - Perhaps a Tisell 40mm or Seiko SNZG series
Chronograph - probably a Seiko quartz chrono, or Citizen Eco-drive model
Later on, when you're clearer on your taste, then buy a higher end model that you like (if you like the genre, you'll be sure to read up more and develop your own "grails").
I had a Tissot PRC200 and Seiko SNZG15 for the longest time, decided to try an Orient Mako, veered off into Bambino... Then slowly shifted my collection towards largely microbrands and all diver.
