will the value drop a lot?

There are many ways to engrave. You can engrave solid caseback, even for display caseback, as long as there is space here it's possible to engrave in the remaining space.

You can also engrave the components of the movement, but this is not as common and often done by manufacturer (e.g. Stowa Germany offers this service for selected models).

On the value dropping, of course if you write things like Xiao Ming <3 Xiao Li, this will restrict the pool of buyers severely (probably to people who don't mind, or people who are named Xiao Ming and love other people named Xiao Li). If you put a general quote, then it is a potential cause for lowball, but probably less restriction. Of course it will reduce the value, but as to how much, there is no clear sign. It depends on the watch as well. If you engrave a MilSub, while inevitably there will be some impact on value it will likely still be snapped up at a high price.

thanks for the reply.

its a clear case perpetual watch, body is a precious metal. my wife wants to engrave something like xiaomi <3 xiaoli 4ever. which ties to the "perpetual" complication meaning....

thus i am concern about the drop in value... because even without engraving the value is already dropping....

Errr.....pardon me for asking; but if its sentimental watch between your wife and yourself, why you keep thinking about value and selling???

Then you have the answer all along. Tell your wife the above reason not to inscribe on the watch.

Then best not to buy the watches. Put your money somewhere safer else every night cannot sleep

This kind of watch won't sell one. At least I won't..

If you are worried about the value, may I suggest to get a lower value watch that you will be less likely to be inclined to sell..

Unless you become a celebrity, the value of the watch takes a huge hit when its engraved.
