Except that the IWC Portofino is overpriced with a modified ETA2892 movement, whereas the Rolex Explorer houses a true a Rolex in-house caliber. That alone is enough to warrant a price premium over the Portofino.
A Zenith Captain Elite might be a better choice over the Portofino.

during my time of purchase, i actually asked the AD on IWC pilot chrono and Explorer1. he commented that not very wise to get iwc for the price you getting.

but... you will be the one wearing, so as long as you like it, who cares.

Can't argue with the points there. Which is why I am usually leaning towards Rolexes Was initially looking at the IWC GST but after thinking again and again, the Explorer 1/Submariner "made more sense".

That being said, the Portofino isn't that expensive on the used market. Usually slightly more (or even around) than a vintage Oyster Perpetual/Perpetual Date/DJ.

And it's totally true that at the end of the day "wear happy can already"

Totally agree with this. Nowadays, I find that the value of wearing a watch comes from the satisfaction of having a finely crafted self powered mechanical 'machine' on my wrist; and how the watch complements one's outfit. If there is history behind the watch and it's design, so much the better. Telling the time is no longer that important.

Which is why quartz watches, for all their time telling accuracy, just don't seem very appealing any more ...

the rolex explorer 1 is almost twice the price of an iwc portofino automatic. not sure how to compare like that...

i compared both watches before, end up i gotten the portofino instead.

You gotta compare a Portofino on bracelet instead of straps since Explorer is on bracelet. The difference is ~ $2K.
At the end, it's still down to individual taste. Just buy the one he/she likes most.

rolex wise there's koh watches at people's park (to suit your budget)

There used to be a shop on the upper floors of somerset 313 selling straps but i cannot rem if they have nato. Only been there once. Else mainly online stores. Hope this helps.

Ball watch prices went up quite a lot over the years..... I remember when I first saw it at Cortina many years ago they were about 2k. Very interesting with the tritium batons.

you like it, just buy I almost bought one last time but got something else instead. till now I still find it very cool.

The tritium batons and unique lume is one of the factor that caught my eye. It is also less common compared to Tag Heuer. Like i mentioned, i'm looking for something to wear besides my Sub. Was considering the black bay and omega PO.

The black bay have always been a soft spot for me, but it's too similar to my sub. except for the color of the bazel. Pre own black bay are hard to find too.
