I am planning to get a submariner from the AD soon and in the meanwhile, reading more about the watch's history and details online.

I'm curious about the short tick markers between the 0-15min mark on the bezel. Do these tick marks serve any purposes or merely aesthetic?

Sub is a dive watch and the bezel is for measuring of dive time. I confess being a desktop diver, but I believe the finer markings help the diver to measure their elasped dive time more accurately in the 1st 15min. As to why the 1st 15min only? Perhaps a real diver can chip in..

took some basic divers lessons abt 2yrs back. but didn't require a diver watch cuz it was just a 5m to 10m dive.

Generally the markers serves two purposes:
1) Countdown / countup for your dive (Main purpose)
2) How much time it will take for you to ascend back to water surface

example if you want a 30min dive. you should turn the 12 o clock bezel until 6 o clock position. once the minute hand reaches the first marker, the diver should start making his way back to the water surface.

The movement of chrono watches are really beautiful. I'm not much of a fan of chronos but love how the movement look. Much prettier than the non-chrono movements.

If I'm to get the Moonwatch, it'll definitely be this version. Why hide such a pretty movement?

Honestly, a lot of time, it's the heart talking not the head OQ is supposedly one of the finer quartz watches around with its movement a work of art per se. Plus it's also considered rare as Rolex apparently made only about 25k pieces throughout its run of around 20+ years.

Due to its rarity, servicing is really expensive, often costing the price of the watch or more.

If the head is to talk. It's really an overpriced quartz watch While quartz is more accurate than automatic watches, the OQ is still less accurate than a lot of other Japanese quartz watches. Now with spring drive technology, I'm sure the OQ is definitely not as accurate as it.

But with a lot of watch buyers, we think with our hearts. After all, why pay several thousands for a watch when a cheap Casio will tell the time a lot more accurately

Luckily, my wallet tells me that I can't afford them The grail watch is really PP, after all "You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation". Damn marketing

There're some brands like Hamilton and Ball that have very nice watches within the $1-2k budget; especially preowned.

1. it's discontinued & rare. (things that are harder to get are always more desirable - & women know that & use it to their advantage.)

2. it's not just any cheap japanese quartz that almost killed the swiss watch industry, but a COSC certified quality quartz.

3. it has an integrated bracelet design like the audemars piguet royal oak & patek philippe nautilus.

4. it's a rolex but the seconds hand ticks instead of sweeps.

My guess is the rarity means that parts are not made in huge quantities hence the lack of economy of scale. Ideally, all watches need to be serviced regularly. Even the G-Shock should be serviced to ensure that its rubber gaskets are ok so it can withstand the stress it's made to undergo
