Nah, it's inelegant, indiscreet, brash and loud. The antithesis of the spirit of black tie dress.

The focus of a black tie event should be the ladies. The gents should take a back seat in terms of attention grabbing with clothes. Black tie is designed so that the men don't stand out but at the same time, look as good as possible with the high contrast, perfectly tailored suit.

In fact, it is perfectly fine for a man to be watch-less during a black tie event. It just means that he has the luxury of time to be dancing the night away and enjoying himself, as opposed to someone who has to wear a watch because he is tied to a schedule and needs to check time on a constant basis.

If a man wishes to distinguish himself wearing black tie, it should be done with small details, like pocket squares, the shape of his lapel, the sleekness of the last of his shoes (or better yet, wearing velvet slippers), using grosgrain instead of satin, his haircut and grooming...etc.

But not with a big thick watch that sticks out under his cuffs.

good to see tradition upheld somewhere, especially when the precocious individual style seems to be the rage these days. call me old fashion, i prefer social protocols for formal situations. i think it actually helps one blend in!

ultimately its the individual's choice as to which approach you take - to stand out with personal style or blend in with the crowd. what it boils down to is self vs social acceptance, and in different situations, different consequences.

personally i'd like to see work settings become less formal unless its a formally organized and prepared event at the highest level. but i think black tie events should stay the way it is.

from yesterday watching "Guardians of the galaxy" with the kids

first time on "thicker" leather nato, still getting used to the leather between the watch caseback and the wrist. in this case its 2mmx2=4mm - sits pretty high!

we are a confused lot aren't we. our weddings have quickly gone from formal to smart casual. its good because its actually what the hosts want, but you're right the abuse of the word to just ensure people come dressed up properly is certainly adding to the confusion.

Haha yep. It becomes obvious when the hosts' immediate family are not clad in black tie themselves and it's quite awkward for the (minority) guests who dilligently adhered to black tie.

I think the main point here is not the sizing but the characteristics of a dressy watch vs say the ap roo in the context of dressy attires
