Assuming a typical definition of cheap, in-house don't come cheap unless it's something like Seiko. Why not get the micro branda sporting an eta movement? Oris is known for their dive watches. Almost wanted to get one. Seiko Tuna, Marine master, monster etc look like good choices to me.

Sorry should have given my budget. Think max I wanna spend is $7k

Agree it is a good brand. But do have some reservations on it.

If u r a flipper, then it is not suitable since the resale market demand is pretty low. Maintenance cost wise, i feel it will also be higher due to the higher frequency of the movement. Higher frequency will mean more wear and tear and thus more frequent servicing.

I think probably bro who have quite a few watches already will go for zenith. For first timer, i think it may not be that attractive partly due to the lower brand recognition by non watch enthusiast.

More free servicing is like a old wives tale. Read below.
Lower brand recognition is impt for first timer? Get a watch for others? Need to get a life.

it really depends on how much resale value plays a part in one's decision making process. some will find appreciation in the watch most and forgo value. others will put value first, then forgo the design/features.

I used to recommend to all first timers a rollie or a speedy blindly. But I see now that it was not really good advice.

Now I say recommend to buy watch that you truly appreciate and can afford, with the intention to keep it forever.

After decades you will look back and that first hard earned hard thought watch will remind you about the time and how you bought that watch.

if you bought a watch that you can afford, there won't be any regrets (since all luxuries lose money anyway), but a lot of sentimental value for a particular time in your life.

maybe its just me, there's financial worries anywhere, I'd like my hobby to be free from it.

that said, the best value in luxury items is in the used market. and i am shameless when it comes to buying pre-owned. :s12:

I think it's quite safe buying a pre-owned one as luxury watches are usually well taken care by the owner.

Just noticed something very inconsistent.

422 - 47mm big dial more space right. They take away the 9 to put the seconds dial.

321- 44mm smaller dial they leave the 9 and squeeze the seconds dial next to it.

392 - 42mm smaller still they did the right thing and took away the 9.

321 and 422 not logical eh?

Answer my own question. I think how Panerai decided whether to keep the 9 or not was not based on size but whether or not to keep with the traditional look.

6152-1s with Angelus 240 8 Day Power Reserve movements

A further improvement by Panerai was to install a 16 ligne, 15 jewels, 8 day power reserve caliber SF 240 Angelus movement to 6152-1s which also allowed a seconds counter complication to be added to the dial slightly to the right of 9 o'clock. Modern day Panerais replace the 9 with a larger seconds counter whereas on the Vintage dials the no. 9 is retained.

True. But nothing wrong with rollies and speedy for first timer because they are safer and a more conservative choice for first timers. And it may well be the only expensive watch that some bro may purchase. For the less usual brands, they can go ahead with them when they learn and can appreciate more about watches.

And true that one should buy a watch that he can afford because there may be a time when one will no longer spend this kinda of money on such luxuries when they have higher priorities in their lives for eg, children.

For preown, they are of good value in my opinion. But for the first purchase i always advise people to buy from a proper AD. Everyone deserves to have a shiny, sparkling brand new time piece along with good service from a SA for their very first big ticket timepiece purchase. After the first, they can go for preowned which is really good value for luxury items.

Yup, they are 2nd hand dealers and got their new watches cheaper by sourcing from other countries.

Not all grey dealers deal in 2nd hand watch. ;)..

For example I know a grey dealer who supply new watches to grey dealer like Chuan watches. So get from which grey seller is the cheapest?

Yes. I have noticed that these grey dealers with a shop front probably gets their stocks from the same grey supplier. I made an enquiry on a same model to several grey shops noticed that their stocks all come in at the same time. So i assume they are having the same grey supplier.
