even for personal usage. plain dumb.
thank the gahment for such a stupid law.

we go overseas shop is to save money because stuff here are way overprice. if not for what we travel.
come back still need pay GST. :s22:
give money to familee to spend

OMG, like this is not really fair unless you shipped the item from overseas to here but bring in ourselves...........................:s8:

Maybe she brought too much liao, that's why she get it...............:s8:

I think if we buy 1 or 2 piece should be OK and come on man, S$400 is very esily to exceed one........................:s22:

lol the law is bloody lame i feel.
why should we pay GST for items above $600? those items are not bought here and no service is being rendered here to us.
and somemore why the lady cannot use it as personal items? they rich, wanna buy a truckload also can.

personal opinion.

But for personal use and buy to sell is different. Personal use usually close one eye even though the law says otherwise. Many people purchase items for personal use and don't get stopped or checked.

Seems like her case, either is tipped off or customs has been watching her closely already.

Taking a Well-Deserved Break from PAM 3-2-1 ...

Just realised how amazingly clear the dial of the PO 8500 is 'cause of the double layers of anti-reflective coatings on the sapphire glass. Something that my Submariner and PAM can't match. Damn, do I love watches!!! :)

Give you a few real life examples. I bought Lego from Amazon exceeding $400. At the payment page Amazon already slaps on the 7%GST. Can't run away, big companies like this doing business for all to see, including the Singapore government. My friend bought from another company, he had to go Singapore post pay GST before they released it to him. And as they are not able to enforce this 100% smaller companies who do not include GST in the bill and sometimes speed post (who takes over from international couriers like USPS) just deliver it straight to your door step, without GST. In such case, are u supposed to bring it to Singpost to pay GST?....probably yes in the eyes of the law.

So if you make it through customs without being stopped and asked to pay tax for your luxury watch or shoe....customs just failed to spot it, not because you don't need to. Yes probably there is a sound reason for the Law maybe someone here in the Legal profession can enlighten all of us but in layman eyes such as mine it's pathetic..have to pay tax for an item bought overseas that was sold at a price point without factoring the 7%. Some will argue that everywhere you have to pay tax if not VAT on Europe it's GST. So.... [shrug]

Spent the most of the night flipping through this which I borrowed from the Library@Orchard. Dedicates a few pages each to every Swiss watch (including some non Swiss based like Seiko) giving not only prices of the models but basic info like year of founding, no. Of employees and annual production numbers. Worth a flip through if you are at the library. What I found interesting is that there are many watch brands that only came into existance like in the 2000s who make complicated pieces at very high prices eg. Richard Mille. I tended to think that the expensive pieces mostly had long histories like VC and Patek but apparently that's not true.

that's a good observation. there are quite a lot of "revival brands" too e.g. blancpain, who had a break in their history and had to restart everything from scratch. sometimes the line between history and marketing starts to blur!

other than helios, steinheart, stowa, what other micro brands are there that are recommended?

squale, aquadive, maranez, armida, helson, the SAS watch company are some i've tried.

newer ones are like g gerlach and of course our very own zelos are getting very good reviews.

Yup that's another observation. In fact seems hardly any brand was consistent throughout. Seems like Rolex was consistent from 1905 and Patek consistent too. Don't know of any other...maybe Seiko too..dunno.

A bit of a confusion here. Meaning to say that if I brought any item overseas which is more than $$400, I need to declare and pay for 7% GST ?

:s11:

If u puchase online more than $400, need to declare and pay GST. If u are overseas for more than 48hrs and buy more than $600 worth of goods, u need to declare at custom when coming back and pay GST.

I even got charged GST twice thanks to DHL.
Ordered my Louboutins online and their website already charged me GST. When the deliveryman came he asked me to pay GST again. So I paid first then got CL to refund me.

Nice got it refunded.

Buying Rolex overseas and bringing it to usa is a risk. Rolex has setup some deal with usa customs to confiscate importing rolex. Read ppl get around it by shipping the box and papers and wearing it in.
Getting it ship by post buying pre own is a risk with customs, ppl ship the bracelet separately and assemble it back.

Stupid... Well diff countries have their own crap to worry

Some people are willing to go thru such trouble to save a few hundreds on the watch. But alot of times, the savings on watches went to shipping =.=|||
