From movieweb.com:

Hugh Jackman and Seed Productions partner John Palermo are already in development with Fox on a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which rocked the domestic box office over the weekend.

According to Variety, the Seed partners have begun planning the sequel, which they are squarely focusing on the samurai storyline originated in the comic series, and whose Japanese locale was teased after the film's final credits. A writer has yet to be hired. Seed will produce.

there confirm will have a sequel. a few reasons

1) why would marvel not cash in at this time?
2) wolverine story is not the end
3) more mutants to come out....

but they better improve on it. otherwise i will see a wolverine remake in the distant future just like how daredevil/batman/superman is going to be.

From movieweb.com:

Empire recently got to speak with X-Men Origins: Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who revealed some interesting tidbits on a sequel, including the film's writer, Christopher McQuarrie.

"That's the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil. It's actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head honcho] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. This movie will really focus on the relationship between Wolverine and Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord, and what happens to him in Japan. We're very fortunate to have a story mostly outlined for us [from the comic book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller]. And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing - he's in Japan in his head!

We want to make it authentic so I think it's very likely we'll be shooting in Japan. Also, by the way, we are looking to have the Japanese Fox executives involved in helping and counselling us, because it's a different culture and we don't want to portray the way they speak, dress and act in an inaccurate way. I think it's likely the characters will speak English rather than Japanese with subtitles."

SuperHeroHype reports that Hugh Jackman has revealed that Wolverine 2 will shoot in about a year or year-and-a-half. Jackman again said that Wolverine would be headed to Japan in the follow-up. First up is for Jackman is the Shawn Levy-directed Real Steel, which he said he'll shoot this summer.

ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype has confirmed that Black Swan and The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky is in talks with 20th Century Fox to direct Wolverine 2.

If the deal goes through, it would mean he will be re-teaming with his The Fountain star Hugh Jackman on the film that was written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie, upcoming The Tourist).

The plot involves Logan beginning a forbidden romance with a Japanese woman whose hand in marriage is, unfortunately, promised to another man. Since Logan won't take "no" for an answer, it puts him into battle with her father and her samurai-sword-wielding brothers.

Aronofsky told HitFix that The Wolverine will be a "one-off," or standalone project. Well, Sabretooth was bigger and hairier in the first movie as well. The thing about movies is nobody cares if the face changes or the character died.

Darren Aronofsky is no longer directing The Wolverine!

From comingsoon.net:

Darren Aronofsky and Twentieth Century Fox today issued the following statements about the director's involvement in the movie, The Wolverine.

Stated Aronofsky: "As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of 'The Wolverine' would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."

Stated Twentieth Century Fox: "While we are of course disappointed that Darren can't do 'The Wolverine,' we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making 'The Wolverine.' We will regroup and move forward aggressively."

From screenrant.com:

Ever since Darren Aronofsky dealt a crippling blow to the production of The Wolverine by exiting the project, Hugh Jackman and Twentieth Century Fox have been forced to find another director who, by Jackman’s own description, is “as good” as Aronofsky. In their search to pick the right person to helm the quasi-sequel, names such as David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) and Duncan Jones (Source Code) popped up, with no news on the project in a month and a half since.

Reports now claim that Fox is looking at a shortlist of directors which includes 8 names, none of which include the previously rumored candidates.

Both X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men 3, directed by Gavin Hood and Brett Ratner respectively, were torn apart by critics, splitting the fanbases in two. After two well-recieved X-Men films by Bryan Singer, these two following films were considered the “bad” ones and the studio desperately needed to right the ship of the X-Men franchise if they wanted to continue expanding it with more spin-offs, prequels and sequels.

By all indications, they’ve successfully done so with the help of director Matthew Vaughn and producer Bryan Singer with X-Men: First Class which has received nothing short of positive reviews from media screenings thus far. This trend was expected to continue with the high-in-demand Darren Aronofsky re-teaming with Jackman for a new take on the adamantium-laced mutant which would follow the character’s adventures in Japan.

So, without further ado, the current 8 candidates to direct Wolverine 2 (titled “The Wolverine”) include:

Antoine Fuqua (Training Day)
Doug Liman (Jumper)
Gary Shore (commercials director)
Gavin O’Connor (Pride and Glory)
James Mangold (Knight and Day)
Jose Padilha (Elite Squad)
Justin Lin (Fast Five)
Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go)

Many would argue that some of these names don’t exactly compare to the profile of Darren Aronofsky but there are some interesting choices to be had. The obvious commercial choice would be Justin Lin who recently hit a home run with Fast Five, a movie that confirmed a long-term future of the Fast and the Furious series. With Terminator 5 going nowhere at the moment due to Arnold Schwarzenegger handling personal issues and the Highlander remake sounding more and more like he won’t even direct it, Lin’s schedule is open and this could be a film he’d be very interested in doing. Better yet, if he could do for Wolverine what First Class is doing for the team-based X-Men series, he’d solidify himself as an A-List director.

David Slade (Left) and Duncan Jones (Right) not in the running.

Another interesting choice is Antoine Fuqua who holds a resume loaded with powerful action films including Tears of the Sun, Shooter and The Replacement Killers. The tone of Tears of the Sun meshes with what I believe fans want from a Wolverine flick so I’m a supporter of him helming its successor.

The third and fourth options most viable are Mark Romanek, who directed the television adaptation of Locke & Key which unfortunately was not picked up by Fox, and James Mangold who, while making the fluff pic Knight and Day with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, nailed it with 3:10 to Yuma and Walk the Line prior to that. Locke & Key is another beloved comic book adaptation and at the moment and its pilot’s director, Romanek, who made a splash last year with the impressive and dramatic Never Let Me Go, is free. Mangold on the other hand, is only working on the upcoming TV series, The 2-2, at the moment with other film projects in development for the future.

Lastly, Doug Liman is also a serious contender, having seen major success with the Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie starrer (and relationship starter) Mr. & Mrs. Smith. While his Jumper didn’t meet expectations, he helped launch the Bourne franchise with The Bourne Identity.

In filling Aronofsky’s lightly treaded shoes, Fox likely won’t go with a relative unknown (i.e. Jose Padilha, Gary Shore), but then again they signed visual effects guru Tim Miller to direct X-Men Origins: Deadpool with Ryan Reynolds so all 8 do have a chance.

Who’d you like to see direct The Wolverine?

The Wolverine was aiming for a summer 2012 release, but without an official release date and post-tsunami conditions in Japan, it could be delayed another year.

From deadline.com:

James Mangold is 20th Century Fox's and star Hugh Jackman's choice to direct The Wolverine, ending one of the most competitive contests among directors for a major studio film. Negotiations are about to get underway, but I'm told that Mangold will take the helming job on the sequel to the X-Men spinoff film, a post that became vacant when Darren Aronofsky dropped out of the film in March. I'd heard that Mangold was on a very short list coming into this week, along with Warrior director Gavin O'Connor and Brooklyn's Finest helmer Antoine Fuqua.

I've heard that Fox will look to start principal photography in the fall. Scripted by Christopher McQuarrie, The Wolverine takes place mostly in Japan. Mangold most recently directed the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz starrer Knight and Day for Fox, and before that 3:10 to Yuma and Walk the Line. Mangold's repped by WME and Management 360.
