I found out that it is the IP address that I need to change as my new router is now using a different IP range

I was told that I need to go into the NAS to change the LAN IP setting or IP address as it is using a different range... However, now I can't access the admin page plus the useless CD cannot work, anyone got any idea on how to change it? Still stuck on not able to access the admin page

How about factory reset? Will it reset the previous IP setting of my previous router and detect the new one automatically?

change your router to your NAS IP range first lah. access the admin page, change the ip to be in the same range as the range you want, then change your router back to that range lah.

diff range of course cannot connect what...

Hard disks not detected

Hi Andrew,

I am facing some problems with my Thecus N2200 on RAID 1. It begun 2 weeks ago when the n2200 start beeping. There was no indication of a hard disk failure as there was no red light. Nevertheless, I took out one of the hard disk and plug it into my desktop, it did not work. I reckon it must have been a failure. I sent the HD back to Western Digital and got it repair. Tried plugging it in and both the hard disks are NOT detected, no lights except for the network lighting.

This is going to be the 4th time i am returing to convergent for repair in less than 6 mths. Buying thecus n2200 seems to have brought me a lot of trouble and it is getting frustrating.

Any advices? Hopefully i can resolve this without going down to convergent.

Play with the settings until cannot access from router

I think I need ip address of the nas, default gateway and dns server
number after factory reset so that I can chAnge the router to be the same
in order to able to access the NAS

Anyway the labels they used are quite confusing. From what I gather,
WAN is for the rest of the network that does not rely on the NAS as a gateway, and LAN is for the network that does use the NAS as a gateway to the WAN. So if you already have a router, just connect the NAS on the WAN port, this is the most common application.

Anyway looking at the LCD you should be able to see the IP address of the WAN port after factory reset right? from there you can access it either through switch or even directly connected (but this may require CROSS cable if your LAN ports are not auto MDI/MDIX)
The thing about IP address is you have to be on the same subnet to access the web UI. I recall that the WAN IP defaults to:
192.168.1.100 .

You have to make sure your network is on 192.168.1 as well. Some routers use 192.168.2 so unless you have set a wider subnet like 255.255.0.0, you will need to manually assign in Windows your PC to be on 192.168.1 subnet.

Set your Windows network manually :
IP address 192.168.1.101
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway Leave blank
DNS Leave blank

You should be able to access 192.168.1.100 through your browser after this.
Configure your WAN settings accordingly or just use dynamic.

If you're on the 192.168.2.X subnet for your network, go to LAN and change the IP to 192.168.3.X so the LAN port is on a different subnet, I think this will help identify your network interfaces as some programs running on the NAS may not be able to identify which interface they should use and since one is 192.168.2.X, same as your network you will easily be able to identify that as the correct port.

Hi guys

Really want to say thanks to Andrew, ConvergentTech, SkimMilk and weap0nx for the countless of valuable advice given and the patience with my problems

Finally manage to get this damn thing fixed up tonight and I manage to get back my admin page.... Look like I got a lot more to read up on networking, which give me a nightmare intially

I also tested out factory reset which did not wipe out my data, but the WAN and users settings only

Now, still have some features in mind that I will experiment and implement for my NAS before utilising the full features of the NAS..

Hope fellow Thecus users will tolerate more of my newbie qn soon...Hehe

Convert RAID 1 to RAID 5

Hi,
I am new to NAS and planning to get the N0503 during the upcoming PC Show. Would like to check whether this NAS support the conversion of 2 disks RAID 1 to 3 disk RAID 5 without wiping out data if I add in another HDD of similar size at a later date?

To have ZFS file system created doing on line RAID level migration from R1 to R5 or R1 to R6, the all services will restart and volumes “user data” and “iSCSI” are read only during operation.
4.
To have ext3 and XFS file system created doing on line RAID level migration from R1 to R5 or R1 to R6, the all services will restart and volumes “iSCSI” is read only but “user data” is capable read / write during operation.
5.
The other combination to make as “On line” can have read / write work as normal.

Nope data will not be wiped out but as always for absolute safety, backup everything or at least anything truly critical.

Hey guys, just to update you on my journey with the N0503:

So far I have resit the heatsinks and reapplied proper thermal compound instead of the original thermal pads and replaced the fan with a slightly higher RPM Noctua. I have even gone as far as to void my warranty by slicing away the plastic grill strips at the back to have an unobstructed opening hole for the exhaust.

These changes brought the CPU temp (i'm assuming the LCD displays CPU temp) down to 55 average and disks temps 44-46 (disk sitting at the top is coolest as it is furthest away from the motherboard), running Azureus with torrents in the background. I am not sure if anyone else is facing high temps like me so it may be wrong choice of disks, i don't know

Yesterday I made a temporary fan holder to place at the front of the NAS to set up a push-pull configuration as I am suspecting that the exhaust fan is not strong enough to draw air from the front which is heavily obstructed by the disks and some other parts. These brought temps down to 51-52 average and disks temps to 41-43, also with torrents in the background. I am more satisfied with these temps and feel more at ease to leave on 24/7. Thankfully there is an additional fan header on the motherboard so the entire set up is still contained in itself.

Also, I have not done much speed testing after the initial synthetic tests and real world file transfers on the empty raid.

Yesterday with my 3 disk RAID 5 loaded to 300GB already, I downloaded a DVD image from the NAS to a Windows 7 machine at 68-70 MB/sec constant throughout the entire 5.5 GB image. This is amazing and I am not on Jumbo frames! Gigabit is a MUST if you purchase a performance NAS such as this one.

UPDATE: writing in Win7 is still at 33 MB/sec average. I have a 64kB stipe size btw.

guys, i really need some help here.

my connection is:
Mio Modem --Wired Connection -> Nas
Mio Modem --Wired Connection -> Desktop
Mio Modem -- Wireless Connection -> 2 laptops and 1 PS3.

I was able to play movies files (.avi) from ps3 but however unable to play through the desktop nor the laptops. esp i have quite a number of rmbv files, when i play, real player will just hang.

PS3 can play seamlessly but not the computer.
any help here will be greatly appreciated.

hi all,
i bought the thecus 503 nas this afternoon. fixed the hard drives and connected all the necessary power points and turned the power on.
there is no blue power light and nothing on the lcd display but i can hear a low humming sound and the fans are not moving. is there something i missed or i got a dud NAS and need to change?

damn it. found the cause of it. the power button is missing. i can actually turn it on if i push something thin to hit the contact point inside but still going to return for an exchange as it's defective.

hi everyone,

one of my hard drives had a bad I/O error (according to the log report in thecus's web admin). i was in the process of building raid 5 and then it gave out the alert beep sound.

now it's giving me the degraded raid 5 status. a few questions since i am new to this

1) do i simply remove the faulty one and re-insert a new hard drive?
2) raid 5 will continue to resume building with the new hard drive?
