I will just say only finasteride is the one that is worth trying. As for other treatments, they are not worth the money IMO. Unless you want to try hair transplant.
sonicblue said:Been using Proscar for the last 3 months and already i'm seeing results. Hair is thicker (rougher too =)) and less hair loss. Problem i have is splitting the Proscar tablet into 4 equal sizes. I saw the diagram for splitting into 5, but how about 4? Tx.

How is the Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo that you are using? Is it effective?

Isopropyl said:same as propecia, minoxidil, and nizoral, seriously i can't really tell is it working. although my hair is thinning, my hair loss is still in the normal range and i cut my hair really short so i really have no idea is any of the treatment i am using is working. somemore i am only using it for 1month. you need at least 6-12months to guage whether a product is working or not.
to add on, the uncle i mention that intro me to alpecin result is still holding up at the 5months mark after quitting propecia.

Isopropyl said:actually i am on something much more potent than finasteride. of course, since i am on finasteride also, i use way less than the recommended dosage and start really really slow so i can back off easily once i notice anything amiss.

my scalp belongs to the oily type. which shampoo is gentle and effective?
As long as the follicles are still there, finasteride will do a great job, good enough. Any better it will lead to serious impotency. Maybe that is why no other drugs via similiar route are approved for male balding pattern.
If your scalp is oily, the more you need to use a strong shampoo to clean off the oil. Most people who have MBP probably benefit a lot more washing their scalp twice a day. Although there are no research I know of, but I seriously suspect the built up of oil on your scalp increase your hair loss rate.
Isopropyl said:most derm experience in hairloss view finasteride as roughly ok in maintaining hair and very poor in regrowing despite the promising numbers in the FDA trial. in real world, it performance is not really that good.
anyway, i already drop my oral anti-androgen treatment. like you say, it a bit too potent for me. i experience chest pain and itch. not sure is it related but it a sign of gynecomastia so i don't want to take the risk.
i don't think you need a strong shampoo. just a gentle shampoo twice per day will do... after washing your hair whether with a good strong or gentle shampoo, you remove 100% of the sebum on the surface of the scalp. the sebum production is constant and it won't slow down or increase no matter what shampoo you use. a gentle shampoo without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a better bet.
