He is not that selfish. He will still help people that he knows if it is not too out of the way and he think the risk is within acceptable range.

You know selfish or not. He only cares about his 大道 when his 師伯 ask him to give back to his 师门 to help return his glory. He rejected. This show he is selfish and calculative. So why go and save when he don't even know who he save. So the author makes the line very out. Not his personality. If he on his way to escape and encounter this, understandable. But out of sudden go and rescue them not his personality. He is non busybody

He recognize who he is saving and he is on the return trip from the dungeon run previous season. Not a new trip.

Is it? I miss that plot.. I remember he hiding in a horse carriage worrying of the enemy chasing him. That's the ending. He even use magic to hide his presence in the carriage and focus detecting the enemy chasing him.

That's mulan's territory and there is timeskip. Now he is flying in Tiannan territory or it used to be before being attacked.

As for 师门 Huang Feng Gu. HFG already chosen to abandon Han Li by placing him in the bait team when the sect was escaping then, so Han Li now has negative or no feeling for HFG. He doesn't owe HFG any duty.
So of course he wants to continue be 落云宗 superior elder.

His reputation is (无利不起早) always do risk-cost-benefit analysis but he act more lenient (cause less risk) when he is near the top of the food chain.
That's why fans has a meme phrase for him "杀人放火厉飞雨,，救苦救难韩天尊"

only 2 episodes this weekend is a little disappointing, the 178 is kinda of nothing much burger.
