I think what he could mean is that prices could go up and down from time to time. Just came back from Giant and their tomatoes prices are really $4+.

But if you have blue chas card, it's 6% discount for everything.... My golden bridge chicken luncheon meat usual price is $4.95 at Giant. Today it became $3.60. Saved $16 on my luncheon meat today.

So, whatever I bought is cheaper by 6%!!!

Tomatoes from time to time don really drop that much. Today ntuc XL TOMATOES $5.30 per kgs

Tom Yum soup with no tomato is kinda sad soup.

HDL tomato soup base is dead with no tomato.

Many authentic curries use tomato as a thickener.

Many "sos chili" formulations use tomato as the base and just add chili to spice it up.

Malay curry uses coconut milk as thickeners. Whereas indian curry uses tomatoes as thickeners. Super tasty. That is why I like indian curry

U n hubby gt multiple condo still hiam a bag of tomatoes? Come on la :(

I don Siam. In fact I buy things without feeling pressure. But how could the hawkers n other household survive with such hikes. Pricing of coriander n spring r also not cheap. Ntuc packing shrinked down the weight previously but increased the pricing . Do u notice some hawkers r not even puting them in their soup ??.

If tomato is expensive, can consider alternative like asparagus.

My family eats at least 1 kg of tomatoes every week. Wondering how other families n hawkers who solely rely on tomatoes to thicken their dishes

I hanged out with China farmers, and they grew cherry tomatoes.

For our internal consumption they classify as whether got 打药.

To get yield, you can only grow under the sun let nature do the work with fertilizer, but it's meaningless if you grow and insects consume them. So almost confirm must whack insecticide and it is normally oil based so won't get washed by the rain. Oil based also mean that higher chance of residual chemicals left and are hard to wash away at home. Some plots no need to whack anything surrounded by plots that have whacked insecticides.

It's the same in Malaysia or even worse since Malaysia is even less regulated. In China, the govt give the seeds and supply alot of stuff. Every wet market I been to have a lab.

China veggies are not cheap imo, after heavy discussions, we concluded with the main middlemen, sell to Singapore so troublesome for what since they can internally consume everything. I believe those we see at ntuc are 承包 run by sinkies or with our govt linked over there.

Malaysia especially is very efficient in growing crops. China also impossible to compete. They have almost no natural disasters whereas China has typhoons that uproot everything, this is already a significant advantage. Plus Malaysia have very relaxed legislations to anyhow whack chemicals, they get those illegal workers those banglas to do the job don't care they get cancer. :(

I don buy vege from Malaysia. Their vege still stay fresh after so many days without chilling. Singapore has tight control of Malaysia farms to import vege

Is random check one. I got go check before, and heard got those dirty chemicals that can't be detected.

Tbh I eat meat mostly, rarely veggies or fruits. I observe for a long time those healthy veggie and fruit eaters, their health are often worse than mine. Some eat until like hippopotamus size, how can tat be healthy. :(

Ntuc is selling at $4/kg yesterday.
Before covid it was less than $2 per kg.
No wonder hawkers r shirking down the portion size of tomatoes for fish soup. Indian curry that uses lots of tomatoes would cost even more ...pasta , sandwiches all using fresh tomatoes. Soon food cost would go up. My family loves and consume lots of tomatoes in a month. Sianzzz
Shrinkflation is real.
