Trying to OC GPU and CPU

1) L to lock at constant voltage (0.9v) = stable clock = stable fps
or
2) Varies Voltage (0.625v to 0.9v) = yoyo clock = yoyo fps

prefer L ,easier to set up :s13:

thanks! i'll just lock it at 0.9v then with clock 1.822ghz. 1.82ghz still better than original stock and boost clock right?

better as in much better temp cos using less voltage and much stable clock. u can check fps in game should not be affected too much ( < 1 - 5 fps )

p/s : just saw your new benchmark , comparing the 2 benchmark u lost 1-2 fps but GPU run 65c max instead of 75c.

I use the msi oc scanner can only hit max 1950mhz playing bf5.Video setting on high,dxr on ultra on fhd.FPS can get over 100 is this good enough or still can improve?

people tend to forget those cards are already overclocked by the aib partners.

every chip design/process have a efficiency sweet spot, after which voltage/power/temp goes through the roof for minimum gains while decreasing lifespan.

spec for the gtx is 1583 mhz. that was the performance sweet spot deemed reasonable by nvidia. but then board manufacturers started increasing voltage and clockspeeds in order to be faster and beat the competition, leading to nvidia having to put a hard voltage limit of 1.093v in order to prevent premature deaths.

that's why even within a manufacturer there are so many tiers/brands of the same chip; they're overclocking and binning the chips to their max performance while reducing lifespan to a predetermined figure (typically 3-5 years), hence there's very little the consumer can do to push it further.

thus the consensus is, unless you're chasing numbers, there's no point in overclocking pascal

yes very correct. Pascal cards will auto boost to higher clock due to GPU Boost 3.0 , leaving very low headroom for overclock.
But few people knows how GPU Boost 3.0 works actually.

This is a gtx 1080 founder card showing how GPU Boost 3.0 at stock.
(clock frequency and voltage used)


1) there are several temp breakpoints (43c , 51C , 57C , 63C , 68C etc ) where the GPU will underclock by 12.5mhz each time the thermal breakpoint is met ,
most probably to protect the GPU from overheating i presume.
That is the reason why anyone with a pascal card will see their clock and voltage fluctuating up and down during gaming and might even experienced micro stuttering fps drop



2) u can see the below my stock gtx 1080 (no OC) start from 1898mhz and drop till 1835mhz @ 67C under 99%load ( temp could be higher if i stress test longer )



3) So what i do is UNDERVOLT my card @0.90v and choose my highest stable clock @1911mhz .
I get a constant 1911mhz @ 0.90v and 7c lower temp becos of the lower voltage used.
No more micro stuttering and unnecessary fps drop.


p/s : undervolting your GPU should give you a free performance boost compare to Stock .

too bad msi oc scanner only for rtx card:(:(..if not its so convenient for first timer like me

yea., actually im not trying to max it. just trying to get better than stock only. its very annoying when playing game like ac odyssey but constant dip below 60 :(:(

yea. thanks mark. i follow your advise...im playing at 0.95v currently at 1.87ghz...not sure want to switch back to 0.9v at 1.82ghz...temp still same for both

im currently happy with my 1.87ghz @ 0.95v for my gpu...

just now dare myself to go into bios and just oc ram and cpu..

cpu set to 4.7ghz...dont dare to try more as 4.8 is red in color..seems dangerous :s13::s13:

ram...not really sure how....but i just set xmp profile to profile 1...go in and change to ddr4-3200mhz...save and reset..

the funny thing is....my cpu-z show 4.7ghz...benchmarck ac odyssey still show i7-8700k @ 3.7ghz...not sure if thats standard wording

and ram..how to check if its running at 3200mhz?

edit: i notice now my cpu always stay @ 4.7ghz...is there a way to auto adjust between surfing and gaming? or is it ok to leave it there as constant 4.7ghz?

Edit 2: just google and learn that cpuz ram frequencies need x2...so 1600mhz x2 then its correct

Edit 3: just test it out with ac odyssey and my cpu clock static at 4.265ghz...cpu usage at around 60%? Temp around 60c..shudnt it run at 4.7ghz as per my oc?

ok. i'll google on how to enable c states..jsut disable and it should run at 4.7ghz for cpu?

so for oc cpu, its the same process as gpu? i just keep lowering down the voltage until its stabilise for 4.7ghz?

Enable c states.it somewhere in bios. Go find it. Some board disable it when u on xmp profile. Cpu oc a bit more troublesome. Start 1.25v then test stability, if not keep adding 0.01v. Shouldn't take more than 1.3v for 4.7ghz unless u get an unlucky chip.

-Use at least BIOS P3.10 the LLC tiers are better calibrated.
-For the clock adjustments (depending on load) follow here:

-Voltage mode use offset at auto first with Load Line Calibration at level 3
maybe core frequency start from "all core" x47 or "per core" x47
-Core to Ring offset (disable so it'll not downclock the ring bus to reduce power draw)
-Check stability maybe with realbench 2.56

-Use hwinfo to see what vCore are you getting under load
-From there monitor the core clocks vs vcore stability, +offset in 10mV increments to add vcore

The CPU default spec'd at 95W long duration power limit and 119W short duration power limit. On this entry board, I'd only recommend lifting the long duration power limit to the short duration power limit at max because entry board entry vrm. Some light airflow over vrm area will be good.

Also hwinfo64 more accurate than hwmonitor.

Yeah If u want to just oc for fun, just set speed and increase voltage will do. Too many stuffs to optimize if u want to get the best oc profile.

actually i just want it to be oc'ed...since im using aio..seems wasted not using oc.

and yesterday after i oc my cpu and ram, my ac odyssey seems smoother and 90% above 70fps compare to my previous non oc which 50% fps just above 60fps and another 50% around 16 to 55 fps. gameplay also seems butterrer and smoother.

run ac odyssey benchmark and the fps increase by whopping 20 fps :eek:

so if everything else fail, i'll just use this as my gaming profile

GPU 1.87ghz @ 0.95v
CPU 4.7ghz @ 1.35v
RAM 3200mhz

will follow bro encrypted profile and see how it goes...and try reduce my cpu volt to be 1.2v..

the voltage for cpu is the fixed voltage 1.36? i shud change it to around 1.2 and check for stability?

just do some googling and found out asrock have this atuner and seems much neater for newbie like me (no need to reboot everytime)

set my cpu to 4.8ghz @ 1.25v...didnt run any benchmark aside from playing games for like 30 minutes without any issues..

do i need to run cinebench or prime64 just to see if its stable?

edit1: in-game ac odyssey still show 4.3ghz instead of 4.8ghz...cpu utilisation around 60%

edit 2: run benchmark with cinebench get the following

i notice that when the benchmark start, my cpu goes to 4.4ghz with cpu ratio x44..once benchmark done it goes back to 4.8ghz with cpu ratio x48...

and i change the power management minimum to 5%, the cpu-z still shows cpu idling at 4.8ghz @ 1.25v...
