Hi, I'm thinking will SIMGE be part of the government funded university? Because it is still part "SIM". As mention by PM lee. "Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced the creation of two new universities in Singapore: SIM University (UniSIM) and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)."

In addition, I'm also wondering certificate from RMIT or SIMGE will be more recognize/valuable in singapore? I'm considering this course from SIMGE, whereby upon completion I will graduate with RMIT university certificate.

Sauce:Singapore to get two more universities

Course in SIMGE: http://www.simge.edu.sg/gePortalWeb/appmanager/web/default?_nfpb=true&_st=&_pageLabel=pgCourseDetails&contentID=SIM001694

Thank you.

I think you need to look at the SIM organisation chart. SIM-GE is the department (or unit or whatever) for DL programmes, like the UOL, RMIT, UOB, etc. UniSIM, under the administration of SIM, is a private university, which was recently given "endorsement" by the government in terms of grants, recognition, etc. In other words these 2 are separate.

uniSIM is uniSIM, SIMGE is SIMGE. It's clear that at the moment, only uniSIM's program will be subsidised. Please read their website.

uniSIM = Local U
SIMGE =/= Local U

If u're looking for subsidised overseas degrees, then u should look at SIT.

The one given recognition and grants up till 55% is UNISIM.

UNISIM was recognized as the 6th publicly funded university in Singapore and is part of SIM group.

SIMGE although also part of SIM group is not recognized and no grant, subsidies will be given. Financing for the course is entirely up to individual. SIMGE's role is merely as a recognized tuition centre for distance learning endorsed by the various universities in Australia, UK and USA.

Go back to the main question. UNISIM is more locally based and I personally think that if you really want to be recognized out of Singapore in future (due to whatever reasons), it will be difficult. Getting a SIMGE DL degree, it is recognized internationally and if you do well, there is still a chance for you to head to the actual institution for further studies.

In my opinion with RMIT certificate, local employers will prefer local University certificate more than RMIT.

Hi TS, if I were you,

I will go with UniSIM for the simple fact that it is local. Why? Because slowly but surely it will become more and more recognised = more easy to get employed.

PLUS fees are subsidised. Higher return on investment, if you understand what it means :)

If in the future when I become a manager and is looking to hire people and can only choose between a UniSIM grad and a RMIT/UOL grad, all else equal, I would choose UniSIM.

If I could only choose between UOL and RMIT grads from SIM, I will go with UOL.

Absolutely no offence to anyone here ok, just giving my thoughts.

For overseas employment I am not sure.. Perhaps you can check with the career service office of SIM?

For RMIT and UOL, both have their merits and advantages. I have known both RMIT and UOL graduates and they went on to have good careers, in both public and private sectors.

Depending on your study preference, UOL is based on a 1-exam-per-year basis, i.e. flunk this and you waste another year. This would be suitable for those who prefer a more academic approach. For RMIT, it would typically have group projects, assessments as well as exams, so it would be intensive, but at least your marks are distributed across.

Lol group projects also mean your grades are a bit more dependent on what kind of group members you have?

Q: Will SIMGE be part of the government funded university?
A: No. Like what others have already mentioned, SIM-GE is the distance learning arm of SIM and will not be government-funded. You are talking about uniSIM, the local education arm.

Q: Will the certificate from RMIT or SIMGE be more recognized/valuable in Singapore?
A: Depends. uniSIM is still new; give it time to gain traction and recognition. SMU started out as a new university and is one of the best business schools around.

There are plenty of RMIT and UOL graduates in the workforce. Don't worry about RMIT or UOL certificates not being recognized.

On an international scale, RMIT and UOL are international programmes that have been around for a long time and has gained recognition. If you intend to work overseas, RMIT and UOL certs may work more in your favour. Nonetheless, give uniSIM some time to prove its worth.

Rather than be concerned with whether a certificate is "valuable" or not, I suggest that you look at the modules in the course. Are the modules applicable to you, and do they teach you relevant skills that you are able to apply when you graduate? After all, at the end of the day, a certificate only lands you the interview. Whether you can stay in the company, rise up the career ladder and prove your worth depends on your skill sets.

Just my two cents.
Cheers!

That would depend on your luck or your skill of "people watching".

There will be freeloaders somehow or rather, even in project groups in the working world.

Planning to take. Any feedbacks about this university?

U don't see it can compete with local degree and yet still considering it means U are kinda tied.

international scale - work or grad school? working boils down to your experience.
grad school RMIT is limited to OZ and here in sg.

what other programs are under your radar?

You will be quite shortsighted if you think that way. Step out of Singapore and UNISIM is unheard of. Conversely even if I only hold a UOL DL degree, at least my chance for further studies or working abroad is exponentially higher.

Key thing is that you'd have to step out of Singapore. Not everybody can easily leave their family and friends behind to work overseas. And the job market overseas is not so great either. Sure UOL grads would have a better standing overseas when you compare to a unisim grad, but that is if you are really really considering going overseas to work and live. As of now, lots of developed countries, even Australia, are tightening up their PR and foreign worker applications. Everyone, not only Singaporeans, are feeling the squeeze that immigrants are bringing to the locals. UK and Germany are also making a big fuss about EU migrants. If they feel that way towards their own European counterparts, I suspect that they'd feel even more hostile towards people from farther away.

A lot factors to consider between this two university. Ultimately, I'm most probably staying in singapore to work.

pardon me for my shortsightedness.

i naively assumed that TS wasnt ambitious enough to think of working overseas & taking further studies.

i personally am happy with a degree and finding a job in singapore. may be getting mba in the future only if it's useful in my career.

didnt know that the dl degree is so recognized world wide, you mean employers overseas dont care if it's dl or taken at the home university? that's quite a good deal, TS can go UK and proudly say that he's from UOL :s13:
