Thanks for the recommendation.

Is there any comparable laptop in windows platform?

Most of the stuff you mentioned are more towards the ultrabook as 1.7kg is enough to write-off most high performance laptops. (Even 15.6" Macbook Pro w/ Retina is already 2.02kg)

Do you need 5000/5100/5200 Iris Graphics or preferably a dedicated GPU?

What is your budget?

There are lots of laptops that meet your expectations, but having to give more details will help even more. :)

Thank you BlueSwift for the comprehensive reply. Much appreciated.

Weight can be up till 1.9kg, I would not mind.

I will be using the laptop for programming and school work. No gaming. Which GPU will you recommend? :)

Budget will be 1.5kg to 1.8k.

Thank you.

First thing that came to mind is the Asus Zenbook X32 series ultrabook. Asus Zenbook UX32LN-R4053H Ultrabook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Asus Zenbook UX32LN-R4029H Ultrabook Review Update - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

Another is the Acer S3 line. But Acer as well all know is (Always Crash Everytime Restart), but it is still one you can consider.
Review Acer Aspire S3-392G Ultrabook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

Last one I can think of is the HP Spectre 13 Line.

Lenovo are great, but pricey (Thinkpads T440s and Carbon X1)

That is all I know. I do apologize if I am not giving enough options. I myself am doing research on a powerful and lightweight laptop for my uni, and did not have much time looking at ultrabooks. :o

Yea. I am also considering Asus UX32LN but the only downside is the screen size.

I guess I will have to make a decision soon as university is starting next week.

I should really thank you for the recommendations given. :)

u can consider lenovo flex 2

Intel Core i7-4510U (2GHz)
Nvidia GeForce GT 840M DDR3 4GB
8GB
5,400RPM 1TB hard drive
$1,299

for programming, it might be better if u get an i7
it does not have ssd, but with ur budget u can jus get one urself and pluck it in.
i have been using its predecessor and the battery life is decent.. much better than my gf's asus ux32
the weight is slightly over ur desired range.. but u will survive... i have been carrying it to work everyday for my internship

coming from a pure windows user here

i feel that MBA would be the good choice (student discount) if you can live with the 13" screen.

Programming wise actually any laptop will do, not really heavy if you ask me

If programming == pure coding, then any laptop will do. U dun need the best laptop out there to write code on Microsoft Notepad/Wordpad. For more sophisticated IDE programs like Visual Studio (C++), Matlab, Eclipse (Java), even a tablet or a netbook can handle. U prob wan a laptop with high battery life, dun wan the laptop to run out of battery after coding for 10hrs straight.

Hi guys,

Looking for a laptop for uni too.

Main uses will be for school(mostly word processing) and watching videos.
Is it better to get from the uni, or from elsewhere?
Bundled software like Microsoft Office important or can use other programs?

Screen size : around 14 inch
Weight : Max 2kg, lighter better
Battery Life : Hoping for it to last throughout the day so dont have to carry adapter.
Budget : 1-1.2k

Many thanks.

Battery life... it difficult to find one at 14" and still last throughout the day... unless u talking about Macbook Air

MacBook Air 2013 Review - 13 Inch - New MacBook Air Benchmarks

Now difficult to get bundle software for office unless u get your student card for student offer.

Cheapest office at 167 for home and student edition... only 1 user :(

Wanna check if Office is necessary, or can just use Google Documents
lol your future teammates would gan you if you don't have office, since most reports are going to be finished using Office, even if they start off with GD... this is probably the best place to get Office for Uni use...

btw if any of you are going to do GPU programming, most unis teach CUDA, so it's recommended to get a laptop with a nVidia GPU...

get Office for Student and Home better...not the Office 365... got yearly subscription and not really necessary applications unless u want more than Words, Excel, Power point. =:p

Google Documents maybe for your own users or during work your company used them

Hi guys,

Sorry I'm new here, don't know if better to post here or create a new thread :p

I'm looking for a uni laptop too. Going into business analytics, which means stats, programming (not sure how heavy) and biz.

Preferably:
1. Light (less than 1.6/7? Lighter would be better)
2. Screen size < 14"
3. Good battery life
4. Not necessary to have touch screen. But ive never owned a tablet or touch screen laptop before. Is it good to have a touch screen or no need?
5. Maaaybe some light gaming, I'm not sure if I'll have the time lol.

Budget wise, I'll prefer it under $2k.

I'll be staying in hall, so it'll need to be able to last me through any heavy duty stuff I might do (tbh I don't know what I'll need to do, so any advice here would be much appreciated).

Devices I'm currently interested in are:
Surface Pro 3 with i5 and 256GB
Asus UX32
Lenovo T440s
The Lenovo X240 seems not bad too, but when I lifted it up at the shop it seemed a bit warm below, so a bit not sure.
Macbook air also not bad, but I would prefer a windows laptop if possible.

Anyone has any experience with these devices, or any more to suggest? Thanks!
