The dilemma for me is that I just have to hit $100 more, which is feasible for me if I start charging my other expenditures such as groceries, online spending, etc of other cards to this card, but the only problem is that the amount is uncertain, some months I can hit $100 easily, but when I can't, I'm not sure if I want to force myself to spend more.
However, the interest rate of the uob one account does look quite attractive, so it might actually be worth it for me to try to hit the minimum amount.
Same here. I am just $100 short. Only diff is my groceries and other stuff are already added in and I'm still $100 short. I refuse to buy more expensive stuff or buy unnecessary stuff just to hit the minimum spend.

And pre-paying is just dumb IMO because UOB counts per month not per quarter. If they count per quarter and you are short a bit, sure you can pre-pay your bills. But they count monthly which means you will be pre-paying monthly. Seriously no sense to pre-pay monthly.

if you consider just prepaying your bills alone, of course it does not make sense, unless you can prepay every month in the quarter.

but your life cannot be in such a straight line such that your expenses is exactly 300 every month. it could work something like this:

month 1 prepay phone bills
month 2 buy phone, new year clothes, christmas presents etc but no need pay phone bill.
month 3 prepay phone bill again.

It is not exactly $300 but it never exceeds $450, often doesn't even exceed $400.

Can switch to maybank visa platinum. Better still prepaid cards eg imagine, m1, fevo

it seems like this maybank visa platinum card might be the best card for us to switch to!:s12: It offers exactly the same cash rebate of 3.33% per quarter by spending $300 each month. I just hope that they don't exclude insurance policies as part of the spending...

For now, ALL transactions (except for the usual bank-related ones) earn 3.33%. So, just enjoy now and worry later.

That's great! But I have to say I don't have a lot of confidence in maybank, they tend to like to follow what other banks are doing (case in point: implementing the $500 minimum spending for their family & friends card), so let's hope that they don't suka suka change the minimum spending for this card too

who cares if they are copycats or not. as long as they copy the good things over, not the lousy ones.

It is not exactly $300 but it never exceeds $450, often doesn't even exceed $400.

then of cos it wont work for u. for those who spend $400+ at least, and occasionally spend beyond 500 excluding telco payment, they can potentially use telco bills to moderate their bills.

ie the occasions that they dun need to pay telco must be frequent enough to match the prepaid amount. if that is not the case for you, then so far there are only a few options that i can see for small spenders

1. maybank visa platinum quarter sp (if they dun change rules)
2. amex tcb at 1.5% rebate (some merchants dun accept amex)
3. anz travel at 1.0% rebate (need to hit a sum be4 redeem)
4. separate mile cards at 1.2-4.0 miles per $ (no min sp)

try to look at net spend and net earns. percentages can be deceiving. and it mostly depends on how "forced" is those spendings.

provided that you can have flexible amt of >200k savings, to get 1.40% as base interest, uob's 2.42 - 1.40 on the basis of using their cc consistently over a quarter gets you $16 per month for cc rebate and $42 for interest for 50k (total interest is $100). that is $58. not worth forced spending of 100.

ocbc 360 and frank offers 0.5% interest ($20 for savings of 50k, but can be up to 60k) and 6% rebate ($30 for online spend, exclusions +++), that is at most $50. but it can be standalone and will not affect the other interests of 360, unlike uob1 who tie everything to cc spending.

my current uob1 quarter is spending in mth of 8,9,10, which i will see if i can reach 500 easily per mth before i decide for next quarter where the min spend is no longer 300.

The uob one account is the only factor which is why I'm still considering this card now, with the maximum 50k savings, the interest rate is at a very attractive 2.4%, which is 3 times more than what I'm currently getting from cimb. So I'll get roughly $118 in interest and rebate per month, around the same amount which I have to force spend every month, so it's kind of back to square one lol:s22:

Think can also consider UOB Prvi. UNI$3.5 for every S$5 spent, UNI$5000 to convert to $100 rebate, effectively up to 1.4% rebate
Depending how long this lasts lah. Sekali a month later UOB change it to UNI$10000 for $100. Lol.

My only concern of cards that give u cashback in large chunks is the time it takes to accumulate points. Be it Prvi's UNI$5000 for $100 or ANZ's 50 Optimum$ for $50. For big spenders ok lah but if like me u dont spend a lot, it takes forever to redeem.

Danger is before u can redeem bank may revise the rates. ANZ Travel is the best e.g. It used to allow ppl to redeem for $8, $20 or $50. When ANZ revised their rates to require u to accumulate more points for redemption, i quickly redeemed to take advantage of the old rate.

I did not have enough points to redeem for $50 but i redeemed for $36 ($20 + $8 + $8). Better than nothing. Had i not done that & the new rate kicked in, I'd have to spend $2000 to get $20 cash back or $5000 to get $50.

The ability to redeem for the smaller sum of $20 is one reason why i prefer Travel card.
