For those who are going to do the upgrade, some things which you may wish to note -

(1) The comp may appear to hang several times, sometimes for a few minutes. Be patient!

(2) You will come to a screen where you are asked to choose "express settings". Be careful!! That will give Microsoft the right to access all sorts of juicy stuff about you. Read the description on the screen before you decide. There is a greyed out option to the left for customized settings. Click on that to choose what info to give Microsoft.

(3) After you installed Win 10, you will get a new product key. It's probably a good idea to write it down somewhere. Interestingly, the product key I got did not end with "OEM", unlike my Windows 8.1 Pro key. It's probably too much to hope for a retail version! :s13:

(4) If you are on Win 10 Pro, you may wish to check that your auto update settings is set to Current Branch for Business. (I'm still looking into how to do this.) Let others be the guinea pigs. If you are on Win 10 Home, this is for you.

I downloaded the latest Win 10 drivers from Nvidia. So far, everything is working fine. A couple of "traps" to look out for. (See my earlier post and next post.)

To change the auto-update settings, go to Start - Settings - Update & Security - Windows update - Advanced options. Click the "Defer upgrades" box.

I just found something interesting. On the same page, there is an item "Choose how updates are delivered". Looks rather innocuous but the default setting allows Windows updates and apps to be downloaded to your PC from other PCs on the internet (in addition to Microsoft's servers) and also allow Microsoft to use your PC as a server to upload updates and apps to other PCs on the internet.

The former I object to as I only want to download from trusted sources. The latter is not so bad on a PC but if you install Win 10 on a tablet using mobile data ...... :s31::s31::s31:

You're welcome. I upgraded with everything in place, including anti-virus.

It might be a good idea to first back up your data, especially if your OS and data are on the same drive. Should be fine but better safe than sorry.
