Asian Open: Fed Officials Disagree Over Inflation, Gold Looks Weak Below 1800
June 24, 2021

Fed members continued to hit the wires with Bostic saying he’d prefer to complete tapering before raising rates, backing up Powell’s view of prolonged low rates. Yet Bostic and Fed Governor Bowman said separately they agree that the rise in in inflation may last longer than expected.

Stronger factory data helped US stocks start the session on a form footing, with the Markit manufacturing PMI rising to 62.6, up from 62.1 prior. Although the services PMI fell to 64.8 from 70.4, ultimately providing the broader equity market with headwinds. House sales also fell to a one-year low as prices continue to rally.

Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 is now in 85 countries and accounts for 20% of U.S. infections in past two weeks
June 23, 2021

The variant may increase the risk of hospitalization with COVID-19 — although that has not been proved — and vaccines seem to have retained their protection against severe disease, said the agency.

The European Centre for Disease Control said the delta variant will likely circulate widely across the European Union in the summer months and is expected to account for 90% of all cases by end-August, the Guardian reported. That makes it crucial that people, including young people, get fully vaccinated as soon as possible.

“We have a deal”! US infrastructure agreement reached
June 25, 2021

US President Joe Biden announced that Democrats and Republicans have reached a bi-partisan infrastructure deal worth roughly $1.2 trillion over 8 years. The deal includes infrastructure spending on such physical items as roads, bridges, pipes and broadband internet, however, excludes many of the social reform issues that Biden was hoping for, such as childcare and climate change (human infrastructure). The package is said to include $579 billion in new spending which will be paid for by the sale of strategic petroleum reserves, 5G spectrum auction proceeds, extending expiring customs user fees and redirected covid funds. In addition, Biden will look to pass legislation regarding human infrastructure separately though reconciliation, in which the Senate would only need a 50-50 vote, with Vice-President Kamala Harris casting a deciding vote. In it’s current form, tax increases are not included as a means of paying for the bill!

June 24, 2021

  • Fourth quarter reported revenues were $12.3 billion, up 96 percent compared to prior year and increasing 21 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.
  • Full year reported revenues increased 19 percent to $44.5 billion.

As physical retail re-opened, NIKE Brand Digital continued to deliver strong revenue growth of 41 percent versus prior year and 147 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Monthly Dividend Stock In Focus: TransAlta Renewables
Updated on June 21st, 2021

TransAlta Renewables’ high dividend yield and monthly dividend payments are immediately appealing to income investors such as retirees. However, due diligence is required to ensure that such a high dividend yield is sustainable.

This analysis suggests that the company’s dividend is very safe, as measured by Cash Available for Distribution or Funds From Operation.

Shares have increased significantly in price over the past year. While this has rewarded existing shareholders, it makes the stock less appealing for new investment due to its higher valuation and lower dividend yield.

That said, investors looking for a safe monthly dividend from the renewable energy industry could do well owning TransAlta Renewables.

Global Equities Hit New Highs,
June 29, 2021

Global equity prices reached new highs for a second consecutive session, according to the MSCI’s all country world index. It was mixed on Wall Street but the Nasdaq 100 rallied 1.2% to a new record high, although found resistance at the monthly R2 pivot level. The S&P 500 also etched a new record high but rose just 0.23%, whilst the Dow Jones closed -0.44% lower. The Russell 2000 is struggling to retest its record high and fell to a two-day low, keeping the index very much inside its three-month sideways range.

Consumer and Job confidence Lifts Wall Street
June 30, 2021

US consumer confidence rose to a 16-month high in June according to the Conference Board, as survey respondents showed an appetite for motor vehicles and household appliances, underlining strength in the economic recovery. Furthermore, consumer’s outlook on whether jobs are ‘plentiful’ over ‘hard to get’ rose to its highest differential since 2000, which could bode well for Friday’s NFP report if that indeed turns out to be the current situation.

Indices: S&P hits record high for 6th straight day
Another day, another set of strong employment data and record highs for the US stock market. Weekly jobless claims continued to fall and now sit at their lowest level since the pandemic began. And, in a separate report, intentions to lay-off staff by firms have hit a 21-year low. That said, the employment component of the ISM manufacturing index contracted to 49.9 from 50.9. But, taken alongside strong ADP beating expectations earlier this week (even if softer than the prior read), it’s not a bad set of data overall ahead of today’s NFP report.
