May 13, 2020

First Quarter Summary:
Compared to the prior year first quarter where applicable
• Sales increased 6.8% to $1.349 billion, including an estimated 6.5% to 7.5% increase
attributable to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Diluted EPS decreased $0.34 to a loss of $0.03, including a non-cash settlement and
curtailment charge of $0.41 per share related to the termination of a defined benefit
pension plan.
• Adjusted diluted EPS increased $0.09 to $0.41.
• GAAP and adjusted EPS includes an estimated $0.09 to $0.10 increase attributable to the
COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the first quarter, our retail business benefitted from a significant
increase in demand, while foodservice was pressured by the slowdown in restaurant sales. Although the unknown duration and severity of the pandemic makes forecasting results difficult for the remainder of 2020, we believe Flowers is uniquely positioned to succeed during this period of great uncertainty. We have weathered many crises during our 100 years in business. However, more important than our ability to manage through this crisis, is our ability to manage out of it.

Taiwan's TSMC to build Arizona chip plant as U.S.-China tech rivalry escalates
MAY 15, 2020

While huge in terms of foreign investment in the United States, the plan is small by TSMC’s standards. For 2020, TSMC’s capex plan is $15-$16 billion.

The Taiwanese chipmaker said the plan was to build the plant over nine years.

“The budget... suggests the eventual scale won’t be big,” Bernstein analysts said in a note, adding revenue contribution from the plant will stay at around 3%-4%.

“The scale and technology is similar to what TSMC did in China, suggesting a balance between the US & China.”

Microsoft and UnitedHealth offer companies free app to screen employees for coronavirus
MAY 15 2020

Microsoft and UnitedHealth, which use the program for their own workers, are now offering the service to U.S. employers free of charge. The program will include resources and guidelines on Covid-19 testing schedules for different workers within an organization, based on their potential on-the-job exposure to the virus.

at least other tech companies, I understand how they make money. tsla, nflx, msft, goog, aapl… :s13:

“A worker in a nursing home, for example, … we would want to be doing the symptom checking every single day, and then be put into a testing schedule that allows them to get tested, anywhere from three to… every five days,” said Ken Ehlert, UnitedHealth Group chief scientific officer. “Different folks in the population need different levels of testing.”

looking at sg, healthcare workers tested how many times?
and now childcare workers be4 they go back work only test once?
worry later another boomz, not becoz of easing of lockdown, but becoz lack of continual monitoring and testing.

May 19, 2020

The company’s net sales and operating results were significantly affected by the outbreak of COVID-19. Unprecedented demand for products across multiple
categories led to strong top-line results. Certain incremental costs negatively affected operating income, including costs associated with enhanced wages and benefits as well as safety and sanitation.

Due to unprecedented variability in the macro environment brought on by COVID-19, the company is withdrawing financial guidance for fiscal year 2021.

Target Corporation Reports First Quarter Earnings
May 20, 2020

First quarter comparable sales grew 10.8 percent, driven by a 12.5 percent increase in average basket, as guests made fewer, bigger shopping trips.

Store comparable sales increased 0.9 percent. Digital comparable sales grew 141 percent, accounting for 9.9 percentage points of Target's comparable sales growth.

In the face of those challenges, our team showed extraordinary resilience as guests relied on Target as a trusted resource for their families. With our stores at the center of our strategy, and a significant investment in the safety of our team and guests, our operations had the agility and flexibility needed to meet the changing needs of our business

THE HOME DEPOT ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER RESULTS; SUPPORTS ASSOCIATES WITH APPROXIMATELY $850 MILLION OF EXPANDED BENEFITS; SUSPENDS 2020 BUSINESS OUTLOOK; DECLARES QUARTERLY DIVIDEND OF $1.50 PER SHARE
May 19, 2020

reported sales of $28.3 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2020, a 7.1 percent increase from the first quarter of fiscal 2019. Comparable sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2020 were positive 6.4 percent, and comparable sales in the U.S. were positive 7.5 percent.

"As the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, we anchored to the core values of our Company by focusing on two key priorities: working to ensure the safety and well-being of our associates and customers, and providing our customers and communities with essential products. We took early and decisive action to intentionally limit customer traffic in our stores which we believe had a significant impact to sales in many markets,"

To support its associates during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Company took the following actions:

Expanded paid time off for all hourly associates with additional hours that can be used at their discretion and will be paid out at year-end if not used;

Provided additional paid time off for associates who are 65 and older or deemed to be at higher risk according to CDC guidelines;

Provided weekly bonuses for hourly associates in our stores and distribution centers, and doubled overtime pay; and

Extended dependent care benefits and waived related co-pays.

As a result of the actions taken to support our associates, the Company incurred a total of approximately $850 million of pre-tax expense, or approximately $640 million after tax, equaling $0.60 per diluted share.

I wud like to think great companies are great becoz it takes care of its workers. and workers will take care of the company.
