I think all 4 airlines you mentioned not too bad la, depends on pricing, can also consider Cathay, Korean Air or Asiana, Thai. A lot also depend on how you wanna break your long haul flight since other than SQ the rest will need to transit somewhere

Prefer EVA but it is as expensive as SQ.

Try flying in through San Francisco instead of LA.

A few seconds' searching on ITA Matrix found me United Airlines: SGD 1105 for the SIN-SFO nonstop roundtrip on any of your dates. That's an absolute steal and you should jump on it; plus, United's international product is actually pretty good, especially if you bump yourself up to Economy Plus. Pop in a cheap flight to LAX or LAS (you should be able to get that for a couple hundred bucks max) and you're golden, plus you can spend some time in SF.

The cheapest I could find for SIN-LAX was on Xiamen Airways with a nine-hour layover in Xiamen, and it was a dollar more than the non-stop to SFO. No thanks.

Thanks Shiny Things.
I've thought of land at SFO but I suppose accommodation/food are relatively higher compare to LAX.
I plan to go LAX-Anaheim-Grand Canyon-Vegas-LAX. Plan to spend 11+/- nights in total excluding flight time.
This routing feasible?

Thanks to this HWZ community, I managed to get tips and information!

I will be in SF for the 1st time and for almost 2 months (Jan - end Mar) for a work trip. Spouse and a 4yo will be coming along too. Accommodation wise will be in Hayes Valley district and we got ourselves a rental car with Avis.

Any recommendation on cars?
From what I saw on Avis standard car list - Class D: Standard Size
- Buick Verano
- Chrysler 200
- Subaru Legacy

As for what to do in SF for these 2 months - I guess most of the free time we get to walk around/explore the city as a family will be evenings and weekends. If you have some places (or even family friendly places) in mind that we should really explore/eat/have fun, please let me know.

Some attractions we are looking at:
Miur Woods
Alcatraz Island
Pier 39
Fisherman Wharf
Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point
Twin Peaks
Union Square - for shopping
Yosemite National Park
Saks Fifth Off Fifth and Neiman Marcus Last Call - outlet shopping (thanks to Shiny Things)

Lastly, probably flying over to LA for Disneyland on one of the weekends.

Should we do Grand Canyon,Las Vegas? Seems like a very long drive from SF and I'm the only driver.

Hope to hear from you guys!
Depends on how many days you taking to drive to Grand Canyon/LV and back. :)

If shopping in US, is using credit card or cash is better.
Wud u lose a lot by using credit card wrt to exchange rates. I have both mastercard and amex
For me, plan and change X amount of USD based on my own expectation. Anything else, I will use CC. Rates are gonna be higher but are you going to be spending.. $10k? It's not going to be significant compared to carrying around too much $ and having alot of coins at the end of the day.

Seriously, fly through SFO. It's totally worth it - SF's a hell of a lot more fun than LA, and depending on your dates the accommodation isn't that much more expensive. (It might even be cheaper, depending on where you stay.)

If the main reason you want to go to the LA area is for Disneyland, then you can save yourself a lot of angst by flying in and out of SNA instead of LAX - SNA is way closer to Disneyland, and a lot less hassle to get to and from. SFO-SNA-LAS-SFO should be pretty easy to book through Hipmunk or something like it.

11 days is going to be a bit tight - more would always be better - but it's certainly doable.

The previous time I flew to the US, I used ANA, and I can fully recommend it, especially if you are flying into SFO.

Of course, there are people who prefer direct flights, but there are only two airlines that offer these, United and SQ.

Honestly speaking, internationally, United isn't a bad airline. It's just the domestic flights that have issues.

Agreed, LAX is really huge, with over 8 terminals. Honestly, I do prefer the smaller airports, like if I was flying into SF, I'd fly into Oakland Airport, then take the BART in. But obviously if you were flying internationally, you don't have much of a choice....

Domestically, I would recommend flying southwest, the best airline I've flown in the US by far...

Downside is the website is only accessible within the US, so...

hi guys, I'm flying to Seattle this coming June and driving up to Western Canada mainly to tour the Canadian rockies.

just want to check, has anyone here cross the border in the Pacific Northwest region by rental car with all your luggages from Singapore. Which crossing did you take? Any difficulty or points to note when crossing the border? As far as I know, need passports, ESTA(for US side), proof of rental car reservation, accommodation bookings, flight bookings etc.

thanks!

Hi folks, need help in my east coast trip in end March. Total days, excluding departure and arrival, is 11 days. Flying via JFK. main focus is shopping, the usual touristy place in NY, food (esp latest fad, or old time fav), white house visit, Niagara falls (says the wife). Muesums , not so, unless it's along the way. Any idea how should I build a high level itinerary around it? Been and stayed in the west coast but virgin east coast guy. How would you recommend ? TIA

11 days is going to go by faster than you think. I'd probably do:
* 4 days in NYC, maybe with a day trip to Niagara;
* 1 day to travel to DC (take the Acela train, it'll be a lot nicer than flying)
* 3 days in DC
* 3 days somewhere else.

I know you don't like museums, but I'm going to suggest a couple in DC anyway (it's not a shopping city, it's a history city). Swing by the Newseum, it's excellent; and if you have time to tour the Supreme Court or the Library of Congress, do those, they're 100% worth it.

If you actually want to tour the White House, as opposed to just taking a selfie out the front, you're going to need to get in touch with the Singaporean embassy in DC pretty much straight away and ask them if they can help arrange it. Don't bank on it happening on such short notice.

You've got an extra three days or so, and it's going to be chilly that time of year, so I'd seriously recommend popping down to Miami for your "somewhere else" days. Stay in a little hotel on Miami Beach; go swimming; admire the art-deco architecture; drink a horrifically expensive cocktail out by the pool at the Delano...

Hey ST, thanks for replying ... This sounds great... Esp the Miami part haha ...
1. Comparing Miami and Boston for the elsewhere part, would Boston be similar to ny somewhat?
2. Would the flow be ny-dc-miami-ny ? And the transport to and fro Miami will be domestic right?
3. In terms of mall and outlet shopping, can I say that "don't waste time on other places, just shop in ny"?

Will be back in the US in spring (early May). I've already been to Grand Canyon North Rim. Been to Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP. Seen Horseshoe Bend and even visited the ghost town of Grafton. What is left is Monument Valley and perhaps Valley of the Gods. I'm researching and found this guide most useful.

Needs two days to see Monument Valley including a drive from Phoenix.

Where are Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Sequoya/Kings Canyon in the above list? :)

just shopping and just key touristy places?
stick with Northeast cost then.
NYC to shop and the usual touristy place.
Niagara Falls to see some water and visit wineries which produce ice wines.
Old Quebec city, Montreal in Canada - get a feel of "France"
Boston to check the usual touristy places, buy some Harvard stuff.
Philly another usual touristy place to see the sites U seen in the National Treasure or Rocky Movie.
waterbury, VT - stay in a cabin to get romantic and visit Ben & Jerry VIP tour (Wed only 2-3 person).
DC 2 days good enough since U skipping the Museums, just walk around the Mall area. I come across ppl who just cannot tahan Museums and those history stuff 1 day there is ample for them, can blow 7 days in just NYC to shop.
