I'd do two nights in Yosemite rather than Mammoth Lakes. Don't forget you can't do this route until the Tioga Pass opens (which will be sometime between mid-May and early June).

Unfortunately our schedule (and parents on the trip) dictate a need to go an alternate route... in fact I don't think we'll be able to hit Yosemite at all

This is our proposed trip, with pit stops @ Mammoth Lake and subsequently Napa Valley. From Napa I would head to SF, Santa Cruz, Sausalito and Monterey

Google Maps Link

Alternatively, to fit in Yosemite I'll have to head West towards Bakersfield and then hit Yosemite. Once done with Yosemite, I'll do Santa Cruz, Monterey then hit SF, Napa Valley and Sausalito

Google Maps (2nd Option)

Either trip results in a 6 hour drive... do you still suggest Yosemite instead of Mammoth? Would have thought that Mammoth had things to see too..

Mentioned this already in previous posts, but this will only work when the Tioga Pass is open (so after mid-May). If that doesn't work, you'll need to head south to Bakersfield, spend the night there, and then keep going to LA.

This is going to be a very tough day's drive. Antelope Canyon is two hours east of Grand Canyon Village - the wrong way from Las Vegas - so when you're done you'll have to drive six hours back to get to Las Vegas. Eight hours of the day in the car isn't going to leave you much time for Antelope Canyon.

You need a tour guide - you can't visit Antelope Canyon by yourself any more. In fact I'd delete Antelope from your itinerary - just head back from GCV to Las Vegas on day 9.

You don't need a 4WD for any of the rest of it. Get yourself a Mustang.

Hmm, if that is the case, since I will really like to visit GCNP and Antelope. If i am heading to only lower antelope and i saw the website, there is a 2 hours limit to stay in the lower antelope. Will that be alright for me to drive back to LV. I understand that a tour guide is required. I saw on some forum they mentioned you can just show up, pay the tour guide at the station and down you go.

No need 4 wheel drive, if I doing a lot of shopping get a bigger car. 2 ppl at least mid size, 4 ppl consider mini van or full size SUV. Single get a corvette it's drives better than a mustang but they are more costly for a good reason.

The 2 families I recommend to go antelope last yr enjoyed it.
It's pretty but not as impressive compared to Grand Canyon. Compare to Niagara it's better. U flew over 16 hrs and drove so much I would just visit. Ppl into photography love the spot.

thank you! I'm getting the full size car since there are 3 of us.
yup, antelope is set deep in my schedule.
right now,

Day X - Grand canyon (stay near gpnp)
Alternative:
the next day - Wake up really early, drive to antelope reach by 7am, get a tour guide to the lower antelope canyon. and then head to page, to d a half day rafting to colorado river. Or maybe self drive to colorado river. And stop over somewhere before heading back to LV the next day

Anyone done the half day rafting in colorado river care to share?

Huh, you're right: today I learned! I might have to do that the next time I'm in the Canyonlands.

In that case... yeah, I'd do it. Just rock up to Antelope Canyon (don't get there too early though, part of the appeal is the light shining in the top of the slot canyon), do the tour. It's gonna be a LONG drive back to Vegas, but it'll be worth it for the memories.

On the way, stop in at the Cameron Trading Post and pick up some authentic Navajo and Hopi souvenirs. (And try the fry bread - it's SO tasty.)

I've white-water rafted the Colorado up at Moab, which is huge fun (especially on a 105-degree day); I can only assume it'd be equally good fun lower down. I'd say base yourself in Page, so you can go rafting then go straight back to your hotel and have a shower; if you are REALLY fancy, the Amangiri resort just down the road from Page starts at eleven hundred bucks a night but is apparently phenomenal.

A thing to note: if you're heading back to Las Vegas from Page, it's actually quicker to go 'round the north side of the Grand Canyon - which means you can drop by Zion National Park on your way through. I highly recommend this! And if you'd rather not stay in Page, because you want to make a bit of progress back to Las Vegas before you hit the sack, Kanab and St. George are both on the way back and both perfectly nice. (If you decide to take the detour through Zion NP, you can either spend the night at the Best Western East Zion Lodge, which is before the big drive down to Zion; or drive all the way through Zion and spend the night in Springfield.)

If it were me, and I was driving back from Page to Las Vegas over two days and I was starting out kinda late, I'd probably crash at the East Zion Lodge, then drive down through Zion the next morning with the sun at my back.

Yeah, I'd honestly go with Yosemite instead of Mammoth Lakes. There is nothing in the world like the sight of Yosemite Valley.

3 ppl how many bags? Crazy shoppers? If each bring 2 big check in bags mini van is the way to go. If 3 big check in a 3 hand carry plus 3 backpacks maybe a mid size SUV best a standard SUV to be safe. Full size car will be small even if u use the back passenger seat.

right now,

Check out Avis's current promo AWD # J046300 for international tourists to US/Canada. They're offering up to 25% off rates. I just changed my reservation to include it :D

The site says up to 14 Dec 2013, but T&C and mobile page says 14 Dec 2014 so it should be an error

Probably a mid-size SUV can, provided not all have 2 big big luggages. Rented one when my family was there, total 5 people, each with at least 1 mid/big luggage plus maybe small ones. Just nice fit into back of mid-size SUV only. Also depends which car you get too, rented at two different location, one had more space than the other, though same "class" of mid-size SUV.

mid size suv or standard suv,

honda CRV / Ford Escape are like small size SUV or compact CUV
Jeep Grand Cherokee or ford explorer or Toyota Highlander is like standard size SUV
Ford Expedition, toyota 4 runner is like full size SUV

not sure if rental does CUV
ford edge will be a mid size CUV,

in fact ignore the terms and see what kind of vehicle U would get.

thank you shiny thing, i would like you to know that because of what you have recommended, I am staying in cameron trading post for one day, before heading to page (antelope, colorado) and then staying in page for the night.
And finally, heading back to LV the next day.
and yes, I will go the recommended route from page back to LV :s12:

Maybe abit late. I read from tripadvisor roadtrip forum where 3rd party agents are recommended

Car Hire 3000 - Book cheap car hire | Car rental online
Singapore Airlines
Cheap Car Hire, Best Rental Prices Guaranteed! - rentalcars.com
Car Hire USA | usrentacar

Basically these agency has pre-negotiated a low rate with the major car rental companies (typically 50%) and only available for non-US driving license holder. You can consider these. 1st 3 are actually the same company. But noted that SQ link may exclude certain vehicles. Trick to that is get the quote via the first link. access the quote from your email with the SQ-linked website open. think will lead to you accessing the second website instead with the quote. you get to earn extra krisflyer with the same rate.

Lastly, alamo (at least if u book via the above links) does not impose 1 way fee for rental within any of these 3 states california, neveda and Arizona. + If you join the car rental company loyalty member (for free), you can add additional driver for free (subject to certain conditions).

Abit tight for 2.5 weeks? may want to stretch it to 3 weeks? the flight from west to east will take 1 day after considering the timing difference (unless u ok with flying night flight).

In summary, 1.5 days to US and another 1.5 days back + 1 day west to east = 4 days on plane / sleep.

Planning to go western US in late March or April. Weather wise how would it be? Probably covering LA Vegas and SF. Would 2 weeks be sufficient? Also contemplating if we (me and spouse) should take a packaged tour (thinking of booking at natas) or f&e. Please help. Thanks.

The prices are too cheap to believe. If you take a quick scan online there are mixed reviews of the rental site (and its various proxies)

It'll be great. That's early spring, so the weather will be mild; we've had a dry winter, as well, so odds are it'll be great holiday weather. There might even be snow still up in the mountains if that's your thing.

I'd definitely do it by yourselves, not on a package tour - there are a zillion things you can see in this part of the world, and if you do it on a package tour you'll be tied down to what they want you to see. The package won't take you hiking in the Valley of Fire, or to the Gun Range in Las Vegas, or to Paraduxx Vineyard's tasting room in Napa (a personal fave of mine), or to Joshua Tree National Park, or to Palm Springs, or... you get the picture.

The prices are too cheap to believe. If you take a quick scan online there are mixedagency fault. Last situation I read was this prrsin trying to use a usa car license. iews of the rental site (and its various proxies)

So far the comments online relates to issue which are faced when customer dont know what is included or hardselling at car rental company or run out of car by thd rental company. Issues are the same when u book directly.

They would do 1 of the following:

Ask you to buy extra insurance when you are already covered
tell you can return the car fuel empty and slap you with administration fee to refuel or refuel price at a high price
tell you to upgrade cuz no more car and charge you a hefty price since the booking no longer valid. If really no more car. They need to upgrade for free.
users are late to collect car (more than the agreed waiting time stipulated by tthat car rental company)

If you saw others, please share.but above examples are really car rental company tricks to earn more and not car agency fault. 1 last compalint I read was customer attempt to use a usa car licence
