to beatoa: awesome! i want to do work and travel too but im gg to grad soon so it's either work or travel or grad trip. but i've got other commitments. IF ONLY work and travel can be done when u are working or sth.

anw, was wondering if 5days to ny and 2 days each for philly(mayb 1 day even), boston and dc is sufficient. btw has anyone been to hershey's chocolate world? was qte intrugued by their hands on experience. haha

i've not been to hershey's chocolate world....but i just popped by their webpage to check it out...& it sounds like fun. i guess if you like chocolates and enjoy fiddling with them.....go ahead!!!

again...if you are more selective with what you wanna do/see....i suppose what you are proposing (i assume don't include travelling time) sounds reasonable.

5 days NYC, 2 days for Boston and Dc each is okay. DC has free museums so you can spend some time there. IIRC, hersheys will be rather out of the way if you are planning DC -> NYC -> Boston

pardon me if i got your itinery wrong as I dint read the entire thread.

IMO, if you're travelling free and easy in the US, you must get a car if you're not in cities like NY (NY's subway is great). The public transport in places like Houston and Florida is just bad. I'm doing an exchange here at Daytona Beach, and really struggling to get around without a car. Currently relying on taxi and public buses (frequency is once an hour! I really treasure Singapore's public transport system), which can be expensive if travelling long distances. You'll probably spend more time waiting for the bus to come than touring the place.

Only Northeast cost big cities NYC, DC, Boston have good public transport.
Cities like Chicago do too.
however in LA, San Diego, Portland, Seattle, minnesota you are not going to find it.
When used car prices is as low as US$3K few ppl wanna take bus.

hi i have just been back from the usa east coast last tues. any questions can ask me. 2 days in washington dc is not tight, it's a very small city. use 1 day to take a boat along the potomac river and try to spot capitol hill and the pentagon, and even the air base where obama's helicopter always lands. then during the later part of the day, u can visit the memorials such as lincoln, washington and jefferson, and also the korean and vietnam war. also u can go to a place where u can spot the white house from afar. it's not so far away but if ur camera has good zoom, u can see the whole grounds of the white house. when i went, the flag was up, meaning tt no one was home but im guessing the dog is hahah! the next day, u can use it to visit all the smithsonian museums, notably the natural history and air and space museums. the museums are all connected to each other above ground and perhaps also secret underground tunnels, so it is very easy to commute from one museum to another.

5 days in nyc is definitely very sufficient, in fact, u may get sick of the city even before the 5 days is up. wat was most memorable abt nyc was times square and central park really.
1 day in philly is enough, pple go to philly just to see the liberty bell and the constitution place.
2 days in dc will be better, refer to my above post on wat u can do in dc.
try to allocate maybe 1 and a half days in boston, it's a very charming and old city, almost like london with harry potter-like shophouses if u get wat i mean. as usual, visit harvard, mit, charles river, quincy market and faneuil hall. u may also pop by chinatown to try the boston lobster (1 lobster for each person!).

as for hershey's choc world, i think it's quite similar to sg's but im not sure abt tt where clothes are concerned. the one at hershey sells all kinds of clothing and i tot the variety at hershey is larger as compared to sg's but i could be wrong coz i haven really been to the one at sg's.
and then u also can take the free 'boat' ride, not really on water, just a moving platform and then it will bring u to the different stations, showing how hershey chocs are made. im not sure if they are even real machines but more of educational style, not really hands-on u see. so overall, the place is not really a must-go but if really sg doesn't even have hershey clothing, then yea the place is worth going.

1 day clear all the smithsonians? what did U see?
I been to DC 3X every time 3 days and still didn't check all the places.
well different ppl different idea of seeing things too.

been to 3 air and space museums in States, DC, NYC and Tucson. I have to say the one in Tucson is the best.

Boston - I love the harvard historic tour.

ya DC is a small city, however many do explore Georgetown.

hello!
thanks for all the help and replies!
currently the plan is to go to nyc, philly, dc, boston and niagara falls. will spend up to 10 days there or more because i have yet to plan the details of the days yet.
my group is not planning to cover everything, but just things that CANT be missed, like times square and harvard uni, philly chessesteaks or the boston lobster(my friend who just came back from a trip was RAVING abt it)

hence, i am looking more for what to not miss. and how to go about planning (ie how's the transportation going to be like, how long etc) and of course if there are interesting places to go try out, we wld definitely like to. btw, we are open to museums and historic stuff but as some of us are not very history people, maybe we can skip some museums. :)

thanks again! sry for flooding with such a long reply

things that CAN'T be missed is really subjective.
most popular tourist place maybe a better way to put it.
my sibling went to Florence and missed 95% top attractions as they are not Artsy ppl.

maine lobster is famous.
canada - Nova Scotia lobster is famous.

are you guys driving if not for transport btw cities its
either
- chinatown bus
- Amtrak
- Greyhound

Amtrak and Greyhound have pass. U may wanna take a look to see if they make sense to get.

lodging in Yellowstone park is close to 90% full now for the summer. I was looking into in Dec. is it possible yes, U got to fly and drive.
no public transport to the park.

I have been there once, went to Teton too.

no didn't have time to request to tour. but i "toured" the white house through the pictorials/videos at the white house visitor center yesterday. walked a hell lot yesterday.....in the cooooooold...until my legs were gonna cramp. we are staying in arlington and are taking the subway to town and leaving the car in the hotel.

it snowed late last night.....sleet...lots....yucks!!! we were driving back from south riding.....scared the hell out of us 'cos the snow was totally unexpected and we were running low on gas. but luckily the roads were super empty at 1am. by the time we reached the hotel....the entire car was covered in a layer of ice.

the weather ain't too good today too.....bummer....that could jeopardize our travel plans....who knows, we might end up in DC even longer than 5 days. actually....not that much a foodie....ray's hell burger was just 'cos we were very nearby.
