Perfect, you'll love it.

Oh wow, that's shockingly cheap. Honestly you've saved so much on the flights that you can afford to lash out a bit on everything else.
>> indeed, that's why i quickly secure the tickets without doing further research on car rental, itinerary and accommodation. Take first then say 😂
Oh yeah, you'll be fine - there's no real reason to go to the Tenderloin or Mid-Market anyway. You might find yourself on a streetcar through that part of town if you're on your way to the Castro, Dolores Park, or Golden Gate Park, but it's honestly fine - just something you'll pass on the way to the nicer parts of town.

Oh yeah. Anything around Union Square is fine - the Westin, the Hyatt Regency, or the Palace Hotel are all good picks. They're all close to Powell or Montgomery BART stations, as well - you want to be close to a BART station, because there's a direct BART train from the airport to the city.

Staying out in Fisherman's Wharf is more touristy, but it's also a lot more of a pain to get to, so you'll want to balance those two things.

This sounds like a really good plan.

>> Many thanks for these tips! In fact, will likely to follow the above and decide btw union square and fisherman's wharf.

I've used Turo, and... sometimes it's cheaper, but honestly it's a bit of a pain in the behind? I like just rocking up to the car rental place and driving off. (Pro tip: become a member of the car rental company's frequent driver program! At Hertz and Avis at least, if you're a member of their frequent-customer program you don't need to wait in the queue - you just go to the carpark, grab the car with your name on it, and go.)
>> Awesome, I'd go register :)

Hmm. Check out the Glen Oaks, it's the least-extortionately-priced accommodation option around Big Sur. If they don't have accommodation, then your other options:

1) Carmel is very nice, but also very pricey;
2) Monterey is an excellent option - it's more reasonably priced, and spending a night there is a great excuse to go to the aquarium. (If you're a Marriott loyalist, the Monterey Marriott is a perfectly good pick.)

SQ Premium Economy is around S$13xx.

Don't forget to apply for the ESTA.
Wow very good rates! I thought Premium Economy will be ex so only focus on Economy. Will bear this in mind for future booking :)

Thanks for your reminder on ESTA. Will book closer to the date

Heads-up for anyone thinking of driving Highway 1 between SF and LA: the latest update from Caltrans this morning is that Paul's Slide, the last of the road closures caused by last year's monster storms, won't be fixed for months.

Alternative routes
From the north (San Francisco and Monterey), you can drive as far as Big Sur itself, and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park; but to go further south than that, you'll need to double back to Monterey, then cut across to join US-101 at Salinas.

From the south (Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo), you can drive as far north as Cambria and Hearst Castle; to go further north than that, you'll need to cut across to join US-101 at Paso Robles.

What to see on the alternatives
You can still do Monterey, Carmel, and the 17-Mile Drive without going too far off the US-101 route. If you're in Monterey, the aquarium isn't cheap, but it's an absolute must-see; and treat yourself to dinner at Chart House or the Sardine Factory.

US-101 takes you by Pinnacles National Park, which has phenomenal hiking: there's even caves that you can walk into and explore, all well signposted and super easy to hike. It also goes through the wine country around Paso Robles and Atascadero. (Justin Winery is a fave of mine if you're feeling fancy)

Hearst Castle is still open for visitors and absolutely worth a half-day trip; and Cambria, Morro Bay, and Pismo Beach (especially Pismo) are fantastic, chill little seaside towns where you can easily spend a couple of days just hanging out and enjoying the slower pace of life.

If you're in Pismo, stay downtown at the Inn on the Pier or Vespera, get dinner looking out over the ocean at Oyster Loft, and start yourself off next morning with the coffees at Kraken. (I've been to Pismo a couple of times just in the last year, so these are all personal faves.)

You might struggle to get it from Singapore; but from the USA you should just be able to walk into the first AT&T store you see and they'll set it up for you. (Verizon has a better network, but they aren't as fluent with helping out travelers.)

which area are you heading to.

Verizon has high coverage
AR &T ok for most but still losing to Verizon.
T-Mobile,ok for cities, suburbs but not super remote area. if you are into remote area, no T-Mobile.

my Starhub roaming is not doing a good job, there were 2 days I have zero signal with AT&T but we really going to very very ulu places.

I just got back from my long marching 8000km USA West coast, Canada BC/Alberta/Yukon /Alaska.

Can someone advise me on credit card usage if there is any restriction for certain merchants.
I have enabled 2 VISA cards for overseas usage.
Both cards cannot be accepted by Costco & Uber.
Any idea why?
Currently still in the US.

Can other places accept those cards?
Like restaurants or 711?

To clarify, my visa cards can be accepted in Costa but the snack stalls after the checkout counter (Just like IKEA Alexandra) my card cannot make payment. Had to use a US credit card.

For Uber, was ordering food and payment cannot go through except a US credit card.

So not sure why.

Prob due to the merchants restrictions.

Happens as well in Korea and Japan.
Some merchants only accept local cc.

If u really want something from those places can buy a prepaid card at supermarket or maybe convenience store.
Then use the prepaid card at thosrle stores.

In both cases I'd bet it's your issuer's fraud detection kicking in. This NYT article explains it pretty well.

Oddly enough, I'm fairly sure it's not the merchant refusing to accept foreign cards, because the Visa Rules explicitly ban merchants from doing that. Visa has a rule called 'honor all cards', which basically says that merchants who accept Visa cards have to accept all Visa-branded cards. There are a very few exceptions, and foreign-issued cards aren't a valid exception.

Thanks. Will check with both banks.

Hi all, wanted to see if anyone have any idea regarding redemption air ticket. Currently did a partner redemption using AS miles on JAL. SFO-HND-NRT-SIN. Stopover in Japan for 2 days. Ticket came all nice with both side providing their own confirmation code. Logged in to JAL manage booking using the confirmation code and it shows the flight being ticketed, was able to choose seats too. However, when calling in to JAL reservation hotline, they mentioned it not being ticketed. They can only see the NRT-SIN flight being ticketed but not the SFO-HND. However, i called multiple times to AS since they are the one who issue the tickets, and every time they say it has been ticketed correctly. They even provided me the e-ticket number. I told that to the JAL rep, providing them the e-ticket number and they still say cannot see it being ticketed. Have anybody encounter such situation before? Thanks
