Any accommodation in SF and NYC to recommend? I will be alone. Safety, cleanliness and location are priority, followed by cost. Location is in terms of near subway/attractions. Cost, preferably below US$100 per night if possible, but I am willing to pay a bit more to compromise on the above.

I will probably be doing 5 nights in NYC and 2 nights in SF. Traveling in May.

try staying in Union square it meets your safety and location. with cleanliness depending on your standard else stay in those 5 star place to be 100%, those 3 star joint maybe hit or miss.

US$100 in SF/NYC a bit more is like what 50-200% more?

Booked a few hotels using my debit card and the amount was held for a few days but I realised today the money was still not debited and the money is no longer held :O

Checked the hotel websites and my reservation is still showed as "confirmed".

Anybody else has such an experience? Would I pay only when I arrive?

Hmm weird because the payments were actually "earmarked". Anw I asked DBS this morning and he said they only hold it for 10 days.

Now I dunno if my reservations are still confirmed since the hotels didn't receive the money and I'm trying to find out :(

did you receive a confirmation email from the hotel? if yes, then it should be no issue at all. but print the confirmation note just in case. i always book all my hotels using my US debit card. and usually, they'd only charge the full amount to my card upon my arrival. i don't even know if actually withhold any amounts prior to that.

Please check your reservations T&Cs. Most (standard) reservations are post-paid, meaning they only charge you when you check out or like after the fee-free cancellation period. However, there are special promotions and certain websites that require immediate payment. Please check that first, as that will determine if your reservation is still valid (at that price) or not.

Most of my bookings were advanced purchase ones,so I believe immediate payment or at least a deposit is required. Now the hotels aren't replying me at all :(:s27::s16:

King George Hotel in SF has a very good location. Stayed there a week or 2 ago.

really?! i didn't know that.

behind our posb card got the Cirrus and Maestro sign. look out for those on the ATMs in US.

there'll be a $5 surcharge for every transaction if I'm not wrong though. but better than having to carry 1 lump sum around

$5 ain't too bad actually. but not sure whether the SGD/USD conversion is good?

when i use those ATMs that do not belong to my bank....i usually pay between USD3-5 too.
