A couple of things.

Firstly, you say you don't like backtracking... look at a map. There's no backtracking when you go LAX-SFO-LAS-LAX; that's three sides of a triangle. If you're landing in Las Vegas, you have to come in through Los Angeles (unless you're coming in from San Francisco), so going from Las Vegas to Los Angeles is going to be backtracking.

The point of flying from LA to Las Vegas is that the drive is horrifically boring; taking Greyhound doesn't get around that. (Also, seriously, your friend's nuts: Greyhound is full of ex-cons and crazy people.)

Seriously: fly. And fly Virgin America, not Delta - VA does LA-LV for sixty bucks each way, which is only $30 more than the bus.

What I meant by backtracking was that I don't see the need to return to LA just to depart from there, that would have wasted my time travelling from LV to LA. Sorry if there's a confusion there.

Anyway my friend was there for 6 months work & travel, and she did get around the cities using Greyhound, maybe she's damn lucky or what, but she had an okay experience and doesn't deserve to be called nuts.

We are flying Delta to the States, think you misunderstood that we are taking Delta as domestic.

I ended up booking via kayak.com

How was the experience on Air Canada?

OK lah, just a 1-2 hour flight. Small plane. The hostess was so surprised when she learned we were from Singapore, heard her telling other passengers "we have some passengers from Singapore !" LOL :D

I've taken Greyhound several times. I liked the rides. Safe and clean. No ex-cons and crazy people on the rides I took

Took greyhound when i was a student to LA.
Halfway through the trip, got stopped by border police.
We got held up for over an hour and got questioned by the cops. Everyone who wasnt white was presumed guilty.
Eventually, they kicked some hispanic guy off the bus.

The LA station is literally in one of the worse areas in LA.
The manager at the station went through my bags, almost right in front of me before giving it to me.
Only clothes in there, fortunately.

Got out of the bus station, only to land in a druggies infested zone. That was... interesting.
Seeing druggies all over the place, cab drivers telling me "they" are watching. Ya, not exactly the safest place around.

Greyhound stations always seem to be in a ****ty part of town. Same for the Seattle station,
Since it is the cheapest mode of long distance transport, a lot of the pax are... not that desireable, in america , that is.

Taking a bus in America is definitely not the same as a bus in sg. Personally, i hate taking buses, even in Seattle, cause u get crazies on it all the time.

I cannot deny most greyhound stations are located in places we all deem unsafe.
I took greyhound in Chicago b4 and its not bad.

It's marginally - like $150 r/t - cheaper to book the whole ticket straight through on Delta, but Delta's a sucky airline (international or domestic). I'd split it up - fly to YVR (Vancouver) and then hop Air Canada to YOW (Ottawa).

Currently i am looking at qatar airways pricing for Aug. It's about 2.3K. Seems like a deal there.Emirates is 2.4K.

NY/Orlando shouldn't be a problem if you don't drive. Just take a flight to the cities and public transport there is easily available.

It is highly recommended that you drive in LA, even with the bad traffic jams. SF has good public transport system. You can walk along the strip in Vegas, although having a car would be good as parking is generally free!

Thanks for the reply! If I choose just to rely on public transport in SF, LA & Vegas without driving at all, would it be extremely troublesome for me?

SF n LV, u dont need to drive.
Both cities are very compact and u can walk around.
SF's buses are quite ok as well.

But LA u definitely need a car.
It is too spread out.
The public transport in LA is terribly bad and i dont recommend it at all.

SF: You'll be fine. The public transport's great; just get yourself a Clipper card when you get here (they cost $3) and go absolutely nuts. It only falls down when you want to go to further-afield stuff like Napa, Muir Woods, or the Apple HQ store in Cupertino; for those, rent a car.

LV: You'll probably be fine. The Deuce bus line goes up and down the strip from end to end, and takes you to Downtown as well - it's about $8 for a 24-hour all-access ticket. If you want to go further out (to Dig This or The Gun Store or the Pinball Museum or anything cool like that) you can snag a taxi; they're not extortionately expensive, though they're occasionally hard to catch in the return direction.

If you want to go and see any of the really cool stuff, like the Hoover Dam, the Valley of Fire, or Zion National Park, you'll want to rent a car. (And you really should do all this stuff, because there's nothing like it anywhere else in the world.)

LA: Rent a car. LA's public transport system absolutely blows, and it doesn't go anywhere you'd want to go (like the Getty Museum, Santa Monica, LAX, Venice Beach, West Hollywood, Disneyland, or Anywhere But The Smoggy Hellhole That Is Los Angeles).

Oh didn't expect bus in Seattle to be that bad, I know they allow weed in that state so they're pretty.. Guess I shall either cycle or drive to school when I'm there
