If you have a pretty old but still usable laptop, say 7 year old+ Intel 8th Gen CPU based laptop, you may want to upgrade the built-in AC adapter (often Intel AC72600 AC1200 adapter) with Intel AX200 WiFi 6 adapter or Intel AX210 WiFi 6E adapter. That will give a pretty good boost when connected to a WiFi 6/6E/7 router.

But some people do not want to open the laptop -- in that case, a USB WiFi 6 adapter like those based on MT7921AU chipse (AX1800 rated) USB adapter will be good, like the previously mentioned Fenvi FU-AX1800 adapter. Based on my testing, MT7921AU chipset has the best compatibility compared to those based on RealTek (RTL8832AU/BU/CU and RTL8852AU/BU/CU, RTL8912AU), even under Windows. RealTek USB WiFi Adapters (usually mentioned as Driverless, enumerated as a USB CD drive iniitally with the driver installer included) tend to have some compatiility issues -- maybe because they consume higher current.

Testing results with an 7+ year old Acer Swift 3 laptop (bought in Dec 2017) with Intel Core i5-8250U CPU, 8GB/256GB configuration, upgraded with Intel AX200 WiFi 6 laptop adapter.

Wireless router -- Asus TUF-BE6500 dual band BE6500 router (no 6GHz band). 4m away.

I have an old TP-Link T9UH AC1900 (3x3 AC 80MHz on 5GHz band, PHY Speed 1300 Mbps) USB 3.0 WiFi 5 adapter. I used it with a very old desktop and never really achieve faster speed than AC1200 adapters (2x2 AC 80MHz on 5GHz band, PHY speed 866Mbps).

Today I tried it with my Acer Swift 3 2021 model and after a bit of struggling and get it to work under USB SuperSpeed mode. The speed becomes quite good when connected to Asus TUF-BE6500 (up to 4x4 AC 80MHz on 5GHz band when connecting to WiFi 5 clients). 4m away from the router.

When it works, then speed is not bad.

Thanks a lot. This newer driver version seems to be much more stable with my Acer Swift 3 early 2021 model and Comfast CF-983BE BE6500 USB WiFi 7 adpter, as long as I do not switch to 2.4GHz band and then switch back to other bands. If I do that, it seems to be a bit unstable.

Looking at the specification of the Elecom WDC-BE28TU3-B adaptor more closely, it seems that only EMLSR mode is supported in MLO, which is disappointing....

Indeed with the force update of the driver, Windows recognizes the device as WiFi 7 device.

1) For Asus TUF-BE6500 (dual band WiFi 7 router without 6GHz band), it is connected as 2.4GHz+5GHz MLO, speed seems to be slower than just 5GHz though.

2) For TP-Link Archer BE805 MLO SSID, one time it is connected as 2.4GHz+5GHz MLO, after that it can only connect as 6GHz band. Strange.

WiFi Speed (3m distance) is pretty decent though since it is connected to the 6GHz band with 2882Mbps PHY connection speed.

1. This morning Comfast CF-983BE USB WIFi 7 adapter (triband BE6500, no 320MHz channel bandwidth support for the 6GHz band) is able to connect to TP-Link HB710 MLO SSID with 5GHz+6GHz MLO.

2. WiFi Speed at 3m distance is faster when connected to 6GHz SSID (without MLO). Basically 6GHz SSID is faster than 5GHz+6GHz MLO for many of my test cases, either using Intel BE200 based Killer BE1750x WiFI 7 adapter or this Comfast USB WiFi 7 adapter.

3. WiFi speed at 3m distance for the 5GHz is not so consistent as compared to 6GHz SSID, probbaly due to more interferences from neighbours (no 6GHz interferences yet). But the speed is also usually higher than the 5GHz+6GHz MLO SSID.

At far distance, MLO SSID (5GHz+6GHz MLO) seems to be a bit faster than 6GHz SSID and 5GHz SSID.

BTW, the two external antenna help the Comfast to get relatively stable and fast WiFi speed even with two walls in-between the laptop and the TP-Link HB710 router.

Floor plan: 1998 HDB 4-room flat, 106 sqm, no LAN ports in the rooms.

Router 2 is HB710. Test point A in the service yard area (on top of the washing machine) usually has the weakest signal among all test points. Previous 3m tests are conducted at Point F (fastest among all test points).

Upload latency is worse than download latency --> that is becasuse the WiFi adapter on the device side will still have lower Tx power than the router.

At far range, Router --> Device (Download) is usually better than Device --> Router (Upload), both in terms of faster speed and lower latency.

And this is also why it is important to have LAN ports in the rooms if you want fast and stable speed across the flat, since you can deploy mesh nodes (with Ethernet backhaul) or APs.

Alternative to a USB WiFi Adapter: to use a old router in Media Bridge mode or Wireless Repeater mode. Connect your wired device to the LAN port of the old router.

My old tests done in Feb 2021. Old routers like Linksys EA8100 v1 or Linksys EA7500 v2 is like S$10 from Carousell (one recent report even says free). They even support OpenWRT if you worry about security. The size is of course big.

Indeed this may work well if there is only one wall between and the distance is not too far.

I have never got good speed with 2.4GHz so I just ignore it. But with 5GHz band I got pretty decent speed from various routers in media bridge or repeater mode.

Main router and AP in the living room: RT-AX82U 4*4 AX (AX5400)

Power line adapter, repeater or wireless media bridge in the study room (about 5m away from the main router, one wall in between).

D-Link AV2000 power line adapter: about 200-250Mbps

TP-Link RE350 AC1200 repeater: 300-350Mbps

Linksys EA7500 V2 4*4 AC2600: 400-600Mbps

Huawei AX3 Pro 2*2 AX AX3000: 500-800Mbps

May be buying a usb wifi 7/6 adapter with 160 Mhz can help for his Macbook?

None of the USB WiFi 7 adapters work for Mac computers as of now.

No idea about USB WiFi 6 adapters. I will check on my Mac Mini M1 over the weekend.

So I carried out the test yesterday evenning. None of my USB adapters (one AC1900, three AX1800, one AXE5400, two BE6500, WiFi 5/6/6E/7) works with my Mac Mini M1 running the latest macOS Sequoia 15.3.1.

Turns out that Apple does not support any USB WiFi adapters in later macOS versions and Apple Silicon Mac computers. USB/TB to Ethernet adapters are supported.

Apple no longer allows the operating system drivers for USB wifi adapters.

What's guaranteed to work is the following combination:

  1. A Wifi range extender or travel router or pocket router that has an Ethernet port.
  2. A USB-C Ethernet adapter or USB-C hub with Ethernet port and USB-C power provider.
  3. An Ethernet cable to connect the two.

Hackers do provide driver for older WiFi 4/5 USB adapter drivers for older Intel Mac computers but you need to disable some macOS built-in security features. NOT recommended.

Today I can get good WiFi speed with the Comfast CF983 USB WiFi 7 adapter and Archer BE805 router, using 5GHz and 6GHz SSID, but MLO SSID is still broken.

Ryzen 5 5600G desktop, with Comfast CF-983BE USB WiFi 7 adapter (but with a driver from Elecom).
