Anyone in Sapa? or been there this month? How's the weather like now. Would a uniqlo ultra light down parka suffice? Or should i bring a fleece jacket?

I was there in Feb years back, I brought heavy duty winter jacket, very cold. the hotel bed have to turn on heater. Hanoi itself also very cold...think about 12 deg.

1st time to Vietnam (Hanoi / HCM City)

Hello, am planning my holiday trip to Vietnam, still reading up the info in the website, in my beginning stage of researching, many questions and doubts, pls help. Thanks a lot! :)

1) Thinking of going HCM City as my 1st trip to Vietnam, ard May, read tht best to avoid period btw April-Nov, correct?

2) 2nd trip will be to Hanoi (actually i prefer Hanoi more than HCM, prefer somewhere laidback), around Nov / Dec. I know this period is Hanoi winter season and will b cold!!

3) Or should i go Hanoi in may, HCM City in nov / dec? Or any month also suitable to go these 2 cities? Cannot decide when to go.

4) Been reading abt their public transportation, seems like the taxi drivers will swindle tourists money. And the motorists will snatch people's bags. Etc etc. is it that dangerous?

5) If going HCM City, with side trips to dalat and muine. 4-5days enough?

6) If going Hanoi, with side trips to halong bay, tam coc and sapa, 6-7days enough? Is trekking at sapa during nov/dec suitable?

4) Take mai linh or vinasun. Taxi by meter within district 1 won't cost more than 50.000 VND. Carry your bags in front. (scared don't go, go don't scared :s22:)

5) 2 nights in Da Lat, 1 night in Mui Ne.

wah how come so interested in vietnam suddenly after your japan solo trip? :s13:

I am planning Hanoi trip somewhere this year, mainly Halong Bay, sapa, and sightseeing around old quarter. Vietnam will be a good experience for solo traveler and an eye opener.

To certain people, vietnam can be tiring. One has to be more alert and street smart, some dubious taxi driver is not honest (telling you that your hotel has closed and bring you to another hotel), con artist and thefts along the streets (photo scam), some even find putting money in all over different parts of your body tiring. On top of that some find the language barrier daunting too. But is that gonna stop people from going there? Europe is also not any better. 7 Millions of tourist visited vietnam in 2014.

1) HCM weather is bearable in the months u have stated. April slightly hot but by June it will be fine.

2) I have been in Hanoi in July and December. If you are thinking of heading out to Sapa and Halong, it might be rather cold. If you are those who like cold weather it should be fine. Temperature in Hanoi in December is around 12 to 15 deg. HCM to me is a destination suitable for year long travel.

4) go with the taxis suggested by the post above. However in my many travels to Vietnam, taxis and tour companies will still try to fleece you. Anyway even after getting fleeced, it is still cheaper than booking a tour from Singapore. You should be fine if you take care of your belongings.

Hi. I went to Hanoi in Dec last year. Visited HLB and Sapa too.

The weather in Hanoi was still bearable. Like aircon cold only.

As for HLB, I went for a day and didnt rly enjoy it that much cus..it was just all huge rocks. I personally think there isnt much to see unless you rly like peace and quiet. Oh and since I only went for a day, 6hrs of the time was spent on the bus frm Hanoi to HLB. And only 3hrs on the ferry. Too exhausting.

As for Sapa, it is unbearably cold. And there is not much to do. I went trekking when it was raining and it was really dangerous. The guide did not tell us much and just brought us to trek. Unknowingly, I was walking on very slippery mud along the edge of the mountain. A wrong step could lead to death. Thankfully, the Hmong lady held my hand all the way while she walked beside me at the edge. Gave her 100,000dong as gratitude. The Hmong ladies on Sapa streets cld be rather annoying at first as they followed me all around. But you could just ignore them and they wld walk off to other ppl. But then after awhile, I realised they were quite cute at the same time hahaha.

I preferred Sapa to HLB. HLB is too..touristy.

As for those robbers etc, I felt Hanoi was rather safe on that aspect. But always keep your bag in front and hold it especially in those markets. My friend who is a Vietnamese said she ever seen a thief using a pocket knife to cut open a woman's handbag and stole her wallet. So just hold your stuff well and you will be fine.

Haha, no suddenly leh. Vietnam is also one of the countries in my travel list. I always like slow pace, laidback, nature place. Vietnam not bad mah, although i not yet been there. Of cos i still like Japan (but too costly for a trip).

Hmm, no matter which country i go, i always put money in diff parts. Language is not an issue i worry in Vietnam. I also dun know japanese, still went japan. :)

When u going?

Btw, do i know u?

Hmm, i am super very scared of cold!! So 12-15 degrees still consider cold for me. 1 thing i worry is, if to go during Nov/Dec, will the cruise to HLB subject to changes due to cold weather? How many days u went for Sapa and HLB? Did u trek? So will u recommend July / Dec? I think Oct not bad.

HLB for a day trip is very rush, mayb tht's y u no enjoy it. Need at least 2 days 1 nite. Unbearably cold!! Hmm, mayb i will skip Dec.

Dec is a raining period?

Why the Hmong ladies followed u?

After few holiday trips during the cold season, i try to avoid cold period already. Ard 20-25 degree is ok for me, but must with warm clothings.

My plan is
3d2n - Hanoi (not interested in halong bay)
4d3n - Hoi An
5d4n - HCMC

2) Any idea what the current and in activity in each of the town?

3) How much average is needed for two person?

Thanks!
