Hi guys, I'm planning a 3 weeks trip to Vietnam. Starts at Ho Chi Minh, ends at Hanoi. Budget about $1400 all-in. Anyone has done such cross-country trip before? Must see places that are outside of tourist trail? Thnx!

I did the trip in the reverse order, starting in Hanoi and finishing in the Mekong delta. Considering your budget is $70 a day, I would say it is quite a budget trip.

Meaning my budget is too tight? Thought it would suffice since I only spend $1600 backpacking Thailand for 4 weeks. I'm more of a nature/scenery/hostel/airbnb guy who prefer the countryside over the chaotic cities. What was your route like? Thnx! :)

$70 per day is quite a lot to me. not counting airfare, i spent about $420 over 10 days in vn including prepaid airbnb.

stayed in the countryside mostly. a meal costed around 10-20k dong.

South Vietnam
HCMC + DALAT + MUI NE + NHA TRANG:
Must try Dalat and NhaTrang. Dalat feels like Genting Highlands, cooling weather. 5 hours night bus from HCMC. Nha Trang is 12 hours bus from HCMC. NhaTrang is a beach place with mud baths, hot Russian babes suntanning on the beaches, seafood and nowadays quite commercialised.

Central Vietnam

Danang + Hue + HoiAn:
Hoi An is a must go. Good food, rustic village feel. Try the Mi Quang and Cao Mai (2 types of noodles super famous in hoian).
Hue is a sleepy town and the main attraction is the Bach Ma National Park. Danang is a huge city, not easy to move around unless u bike. Famous of its beach.

North Vietnam
HANOI + HALONG BAY + SAPA
I been to Hanoi but not HLB and Sapa.

My advice is to move around Vietnam on night buses. Dont take the train, its not that safe unless you can book a cabin of 4 beds. Buses are cheap and easily bookable from backpackers areas in HCMC and Hanoi.

Is it safe to take night buses where Road safety is concerned?

spent 4 nights down south in the mekong and another 4 nights in dalat.

travelled by bus as there is no train. bus service in the south is much more developed than other parts of viet nam and buses are newer and better. you could use futa, the biggest operator, but they usually have their own stations located far away from town or city centres.

the mekong is amazing. the river is huge and bridges are gradually being built to replace ferry crossings. stayed in chau doc and took the ferry to the phum soai kampung on the opposite side of the river. met and talked to a number malay villagers. communication was harder than i initially thought because their malay is as bad as my vietnamese!

food in the south is plentiful and cheap and the people there are much more honest and friendly than those in big cities like sai gon.

managed to squeeze one night in can tho in order to make a day trip to soc trang. wanted to meet some khmer people so i went to wat khleang. was told that the temple in tra vinh is better but i didnt have time to visit both. had the famous bun nuoc leo in soc trang.

can tho is a lovely, modern and orderly city in contrast to the overcrowded and hectic sai gon. the night market and fashion alleys felt more like yongkang street in taipei. if i need a place in the south with modern amenities to relax and chill out, i would choose can tho over sai gon.

dalat is very similar to cameron highlands but much bigger and modern. lots of lakes and waterfalls. visited a koho village.

this trip was remarkably different than all my previous trips in that i came in contact with many non-kinh people.

if you can, try to include pleiku, kontum and qui nhon. i heard they are good and these places dont get a lot of tourists and you get to experience viet nam in its more original form.

Hi all, am looking at a short 4days trip to HCM in May 2017.

Would a local data sim card be available for purchase at the international airport? I understand there are changes with effect from Dec 2016.

Should be looking to get from Vinaphone. What are the charges like?

Changi recommends wifi router seems pretty ex? $12 per day
