Hi Tech,

Well, I have just came back from my recent trip to Vietnam and have finally gotton off my lazy A*rse to post some pictures I took during my stay there.

To be honest, I am quite shocked at the general cost of living there. Inflation has risen in the past years at a rate of approx 15 %. Meat which cost 50,000 Dong 2 months ago is now selling for 70,000. Which is an increase of 40%.

By it's own estimate, the affluent 20 percent of the population is seven times as well off as the poorest 2 percent.

By now you would have thought this would be a all doom and gloom kind of thread but I can say I enjoyed myself throughly. Enjoy the pictures. Comments, positive or negative are encouraged.

I will post them in order how they were experienced followed by a short caption. :)

I saw a few locals buying these and being a believer that it's always good to try what the locals buy anyway... Pinapple Tarts.

Sorry couldn't resist taking a bite. The pastry is much harder than what we get here akin to a thin biscuit.

It was a real sunny day then, although the weather is a real Jekyll and Hyde. Many fellow tourists were drenched by the rain and very unpredictation weather. Please note that pictures are not in sequence... :)

Last but not least, food... A topic close to our heart and one which I enjoyed. Local street food at it's best IMO.

BanhMiThingy2.jpg

A staple food, it costs about 90 cents and is fantastic. Sorry about the blur lens. It was really cold and the lens kept condensing.

Amazing crab noodles. Enuf said... About 2 dollars Sing...

Small kueh which tastes a lot like the local kueh we get here with a hint of ginger...

Budget French Food @ Augustins... Do make reservations or head down early...

A local fruit which reminds of a cross between a rose apple and a tomato... It is really small, around the size of a loggan.

VietnamDoughnuts2.jpg

Local Doughnuts, they taste like "Beh Seh Toh". But with the feeling on the outside instead.

TuttiFruitti2.jpg

Expensive Yummy Yogurt clone... like 6 dollars per order...

Famous Vietnamese Spring Rolls...

My Fav so far... Vietnamese take on Char Teow Kway...

You do not dip the sauce in but pour the contents of the sauce plate over... Realllllyy Yummy! They don't use the same white carrot cake as us but use rice cakes instead.

Thats all for now.. There are a lot more photos but Photobucket is being an A*rse right now... :)

just went to check out the land package tour for HCM.

5D 4N, fully guided
Cheapest was S$408 per pax (excluding air ticket)
hotel in District 1, 3 star-hotel: Elios or Vien Dong or Le Duy
all meals provided except 1st and last day

itin:

day 01- tour guide pick up, followed by F&E
day 02- Cu Chi (AM), Vung Tau tour(PM)- Tian Hou temple
and stay overnite in Vung Tau
day 03- Vung Tau tour - jesus monument, then go back to HCM to visit Notre Dame Cathedral, Centre POst Office, City Hall
day 04- My Tho tour - vinh trang pagado, mekong river, ben thanh market
day 05- F&E, airport transfer to airport

1) Is the price worth the itin provided? or at least reasonable?

2) In terms of location, which of the 3 hotels quoted is the most convenient for shopping, as well as hotel cleanliness/ services/ classiness?

3) For NOv travel, woudl the weather be bitterly cold, and would any of the river-related activities be affected by monsoon season?

thanks

Note: I know F&E can allow me to see more things, but i am jsut concerned abt safety and language.

since most of my meals in HCMC woudl be provided under the tour package, how much VND shd i be changing (on average) for myself and wife?

Shopping wise- dont think we will be spending alot.
Probably spending most of the money on trying out some local food and taxi fares...
would S$100 suffice for 5D4N for 2 persons?

OT abit, talking abt taxi, the recommended ones are Vinasun right? HOw do i identify a Vinasun cab?
Is it better that i get Elios Hotel staff to book a Vinasun cab for me OR can i just hail it off-street?

Any particular situation whereby the cabs would not go by meter, but instead a flat-negotiated rate? For example, rush hour timing?

thanks

i have a tip for all who would want to look for supper after midnight.

cos most of the stores are closed, you can check out Sheraton Hotel's casino and they have free food for their customers.
just go there and play a bit and you get to taste some great food which is super hard to find after midnight.
