I really worry about the roll out process of this feature. Don't know if MVNO's have any chance/time to do testing if ST enables last minute.
Besides VoLTE, there is also a need to implement USSD over LTE. USSD is used when you set call forwarding, call waiting or other short code dialing (like *100#, *1288#, etc.). Currently when setting call forwarding on ST MVNO, phone still falls back to 3G to do it. If they only implement VoLTE but forget to do USSD over LTE, although not everyone uses this feature, there will still be trouble.
Aiya, high chance on 1 Sept 2024, 3G will still be available. Don’t need to panic.

got news for 3G still avail in Sept? or "experience talk"
Experience probably, given how inefficient some agencies can be. :s13:

"Oops I accidentally forgot to switch off 90% of my 3G base stations cos of configuration error."

Unless IMDA punishes errant MNOs by fully revoking their 5G license if they even have a single 3G station/cell still broadcasting at 12.01am on 1 Sep. Perhaps then we can find them super compliant cos there are operators waiting to apply for the freed up licenses.

It’s also a much smarter move to turn off in stages, to minimise disruption to their more valuable corporate customers. Especially those with payment systems or automation still running on 3G. Easier to help a customer panic upgrade to 4G one site at the time, rather than islandwide downing of all their business sites.

The 31 July will be the last date any support for 3G should still be active. After which, it will take a while to switch all the 3G resources over to 4G/5G. Will definitely take a while.

But they should already have tested this in a “non-production” environment by now.

hope they did. I noticed a number of credit card POS devices are still showing 3G connection. If 3G instant cut-off in Aug sounds like a mess

Yes. I saw the POS on 3G too. But all telcos have to cut off 3G by 31 July 2024. Then the switch over can happen.

Afraid that many shop owners didn’t know they need to update their POS. Even if telco warn them, they still didn’t change

Possibly. But the changes can be made relatively quickly. Perhaps some of the payments methods will be made temporarily unavailable.

I am sure some shop owners also had problems with the GST changes in 2023 and 2024. Should be similar in terms of the 3G problem.

Checked with Vivifi on volte implementation but they just give a vague answer that it will be automatically enabled after 31 July.

Makes me feel unsure how the rollout will be smooth or not, feel like porting to Eight $8 plan if they screwed up this volte rollout.
Hahahaha if screw up likely is Singtel screw up instead of Vivifi. Vivifi probably keep it till the last day to save some money. VoLTE is very mature tech hopefully no surprises. Got surprise baotoh to IMDA haha

Anyway as long as data still going can Whatsapp call it's less than half bad for me.

Only spammers use normal calls nowadays. :s13:

It's not that they didn't know. They didn't care. Pretty sure sufficient notice was given, also to the POS vendors.

No reason to support these customers imo. Just cut them out. They lose business, their own fault.

Normal calls are beneficial and reliable for business use. If only whatsapp calls do not drop that often, many of us will be fine with data/wifi calls.
