The unlimited plan uses the local (China) telecom, China Unicom for Starhub. So there'll be the firewall. Defeats TS's addiction to FB

Since my understanding is that TS can only use the wifi in the hotel lobby, which means he won't have access to data much, kinda waste of money to get VPN.

With TS's serious addiction to FB, the best method is to get data roaming + VPN.
Can post to FB any second he wants to.

does anyone got an idea the current regulation for bringing powerbank and clearing the beijing capital PEK airport? taking SQ flight to and fro. my power bank is valore, squarish black design and 6000maH. will this be confiscated at the airport customs? if i keep it in luggage and not hand carry will they check?

Also for wifi i am going to buy a vpn to go so that i can use wifi anywhere in beijing and not restricted to use in hotel and room. although the hotel got free wifi and room wifi is chargable at a cost. is this ok?

6,000mAh portable chargers are allowed in all China Airport as I use a 10,000mAh XiaoMi version whenever I move around in China.
As you use Samsung S4, I can't advice much since I am on iphone. However, you may google and find out more. I do think your S4 should be able to utilise the 3G services on Chhina Unicom联通. Don't get China Telecom电信 as SG phones will not support it's network. Try google apps store to purchase HotspotVPN, you should be able to use it in Beijing. I am using this VPN in China.

Hotels in Wangfujing

I personally prefer the Grand Hyatt in Wangfujing as it is very near to the MRT station. The mall beside it has a very good restaurants at the basement that is link also to the Wangfujing station

Hilton is quite a distance from both Wangfujing station and Dengshikou station. If you are going to stay on that street why not try Waldorf Astoria which is across the street. It was built in 2014 and service is top notch. Probably the best hotel in Beijing right now.
