GeForce GTX 970 Design Flaw Caps Video Memory Usage to 3.3 GB: Report
by btarunr Saturday, January 24th 2015 12:02 Discuss (8 Comments)

It may be the most popular performance-segment graphics card of the season, and offer unreal levels of performance for its $329.99 price, but the GeForce GTX 970 suffers from a design flaw, according to an investigation by power-users. GPU memory benchmarks run on GeForce GTX 970 show that the GPU is not able to address the last 700 MB of its 4 GB of memory.

The "GTX 970 memory bug," as it's now being called on tech forums, is being attributed to user-reports of micro-stutter noticed on GTX 970 setups, in VRAM-intensive gaming scenarios. The GeForce GTX 980, on the other hand, isn't showing signs of this bug, the card is able to address its entire 4 GB. When flooded with posts about the investigation on OCN, a forum moderator on the official NVIDIA forums responded: "we are still looking into this and will have an update as soon as possible."

Some new games may eat more vram than you realised at 1080p and 4xmsaa!

If you use it for 1440p Qnix monitors and such, GG!

Don't think its a big problem though. Cause vast majority of the games use just around 3GB. If your game needs 4GB, then the GPU becomes bottleneck already.

Such a naive comment, especially when dealing with expensive high end gear. Gimped by about 700/4096 * 100 = 17% and there are already games that cross the 3.3 gig threshold without DSR. lol.

There are games that will exceed 3gb vram.

Most AAA titles on 1080p will already exceed 3gb vram.

My 1440p already taken up 3.4-3.6gb vram.

If you pay for 4GB VRAM, you should get 4GB.
Whether you use it or not, its irrelevant.

Most ppl dont realize they bought a 970. Based on nvidia's official statement, you dont lose much performance at >3.5gb games compared to 980.

Still at the price you bought, is there any other comparable card?

290X lightning loh

Essentially 970 is like their older 660. cut cut cut. the actual useful memory is less than the advertised.

depends on how ngiao chee ngiao lan you are, up to one to see if 970 is cheaper than (or overpriced) 980 justified a lowered expectations of the advertised specs.

Hmmm not too long ago everyone here was grabbing 970s like there's no tomorrow from lazada. So i guess they are happy with their purchase.

Anyway from the official reply, the gtx 970 is capable of utilizing 4gb ram.

There's no question that all 4 gb can be accessed, the question is why the 0.5 gb of that VRAM only performs at less than 1/10 of the other 3.5 gb or why the drivers try to cheat by trying to restrict VRAM access to that 3.5 gb as much as possible.

Essentially making the GPU a 3.5 gb card with a very slow 0.5 gb cache.

Anyway, remember this incident before posting about strange performance issues for certain games, existing and upcoming. There are years ahead with DX12 and 4K gaming...

Well, in this case, you get what you paid for. I mean, what did you expect from that kind of price level, right. Something's gotta give, somewhere.
