There are 2 types of water heater, storage or instant. You can take a walk along Jalan Besar which there are many shops to choose from. :)

For Central heating you would be looking at the Gallon Heater. Make sure you tell the seller the number of locations you want hot water. Eg. 02 toilets & kitchen.

The instant ones only heat water at that specific location.

Pros & Cons

Instant ones in terms of electric bills lower & technically you get hot water within 5-8 mins. But power wise it's weak, if you like a strong shower this is not for you.

Gallon Heater will give you hot water with a strong shower but you need to wait maybe 15 mins. (But the longer you wait the longer you can have your hot shower for, if you enjoy long hot showers) But if you forgot to switch off your heater the heater will continue boiling even though no one is using the shower. The Gallon Heater works on boiling the water when it drops to a certain temp (But you can set this lower & reduce wastage in cases like this but will also effectively mean the hot water will not be as hot).

An alternative is the gas heater. Since PUB is supplying public gas to a lot of the estates why not use this? I used to use this type of heater overseas (Australia, Shanghai, Macau) & to me it's the best. It gives very hot water in a relatively short amount of time as the water is heated directly.

I know there would be people saying it's dangerous... Fyi in the apartment I was staying in Australia the whole building was using this system. If it was dangerous do you think Australia would allow this? Another thing I would like to add is when I was in Shanghai & Macau I do not even switch off the heater. It only heats the water centrally when I turn on the tap... So no worries on crazy utility bills (In the event you forgot to switch off the Gallon Heater). Plus gas is definitely cheaper than electricity.

But one flaw... Whenever you turn on your tap (With hot water) you will hear a "whoop" sound... That's the sound of the fire being ignited to heat up your water. If you just turn on cold water there would be no sound.

But there is a way to go round this. I seriously doubt one will need hot water in the kitchen. Just route hot water to the bathrooms & place the gas heater in the kitchen. So you won't hear it that much.

But please check out the prices, models, sizes to suit your needs.

Writing here to share my horrible experience with a water heater I've purchased and the terrible service by the agent supporting the heater.

Bought an instant water heater by the brand of Regal, model - Super Multi at IMM (Choon Ying Pte Ltd).

As advised by an outsourced contractor provided by the agent, he mentioned that I should be using heat setting of level 2 at most. The water heater trips (electricity cut off) 4 to 5 times every month at heat level setting of 2, 3 and even 1! So basically, it is not usable. Every month I've to take out the casing to exposed the water heater tank and using a test-pen to click/reset the heater to make it work again.

Still under warranty, I contacted the agent - Choong Ying Pte Ltd who is located at 3, Kaki Bukit Road 2, #01-08A Eunos Warehouse Complex, Singapore 417837. To my horror, a lady by the name of Ms Tian (and sebsequent call - Ms He) answered the call and told me that I've to pay $40 for transport for their guys to come down to my place to look at the water heater and service it. I asked why the need to pay $40 when my heater is covered under warranty. To which she replied even if after servicing, they still can't resolve the issue, it's company's policy to collect $40 for transport to go down for subsequent service/checks.

So to all those looking for water heaters, do stay far away from such irresponsible agent and lousy product. Make sure you look, double check and ask for the terms of warranty and get black and white on the terms before you part your money.

Storage tank to provide hot water to whole house need to run pipes to where you want hot water. You also need to change your taps.

Got different size storage tank. Need time to heat the tank before you get hot water. For instant heater, you get hot water instantly but cant be used for bath tub. Bath tub need storage tank.

i had the same issue with my previous 2 ariston water heaters. luckily ariston doesn't charge me for servicing 'cos it happened several times. i'm not sure whether it's the temperature of the water or the water pressure that caused the thermostate to trip. it's quite hard to reach a good setting....'cos too low, the water is too hot....too high, the water doesn't get hot enough.

I just changed my ariston storage heater to joven storage heater. My previous 2 ariston storage heaters leaked just a couple of months after expiry of warranty! I changed to joven because it gives me 10 years of leak proof warranty.

if u bake cakes, hot water is better to wash all the equipments. So having hot water isn't that useless in a kitchen sink.
