I'm using this RHEEM Xwell Slim XS for the past 1.5years for new home
I see not many people mentioning this model
Rheem is a very reputable company ma?

The design very clean and nice
30L size only $260

Was using Joven for previous BTO home of 11 years but found it look ugly and the hot water felt like take too long
It lasted me 10years and i bought an exact model before i sold the home..

Anyone using AOS or AO Smith water storage heater? Is the water temperature consistent or it will fluctuate among hot, lukewarm or cold?

Thank you.

You should be buying the heater cos of the brand (quality) and capacity and not just due to timer.

If your objective is to have full tank of hot water by the time you reached home. Then a simple modification to any (dumb) storage heater is to change your heater switch to a 20A smart switch and remotely turn it on when your ETA is 15-20mins. It will be a cheaper alternative.
Hi pardon my ignorance but i will still need a smart home system for the heater switch right? if not how to on and off the switch remotely?

Yes. You will need a hub to talk to the smart switch to link to your phone.

e.g. Homekit compatible 20A smart switch, link to AppleTV / HomePod / HomePod Mini, link to your Apple Homekit in your iPhone.

Then you can use Siri to turn on / off, press the button / app physically on your mobile, to toggle on / off.

For me, I set timer, sunrise turn on, turn off 1h later. sunset turn on, turn off 1h later. It will ensure I have hot water in morning and evening when I leave and return home from work. You can set your own automation.

I am using since 2018, the water constantly hot, and the digital setting is useful depending usage.

If there is only 1 storage heater, why would it not operate unless it is not for storage heater.

No, that switch outside the main bathroom is only connected to the heater point located near the ceiling. A storage tank water heater installed in the common bathroom will use the switch outside the common bathroom.

Can show photo of your installation? Does it fit nicely at the top part where your pictured Joven is mounted on?

I ordered a KDK but after we bought, we saw the manual states we need to leave 15cm space above the heater top. This Rheem XS only needs 2cm, which is much more reasonable.

But most people want hot water on demand without sacrificing water pressure (instant heater).
You forgot one more thing: electricity consumption.
Like fast, cheap and good. The 3 things cannot be achieved.
  • Hot water on demand = high electric bill.
  • Hot water with low electric bill: cannot be on demand, sacrifice volume flow rate (small flow) or time (wait for storage tank to heat up).
  • Warm water with low electric bill: on demand is no issue, sacrifice the temperature.

Hot water with low electric bill technically doesn't really exist. I don't find instant heaters (even at the highest settings) unbearably hot. Especially so if it's a rainy day and the incoming water is very cold. It struggles to heat it up to luke warm at best.

My hack previously when using instant heaters is to modulate the water flow to ensure maximum heat up time before it exits the shower head.

Most ppl these days leave their heaters 24/7, at least based on my observations on new couples / homeowners.

I used a hybrid approach where I set home automation to heat up the water in the morning and evening for an hour each so that I have hot water on demand.

If I need it during the day or outside the heating timings, I can just manually trigger from voice assistant / app control
