OCBC is running a campaign from today to promote cashless payment in China through their app.

Right direction to finally have a single app, but rates aren't as good IIRC.
Definitely still a compelling option personally for redundancy.

i tried their app in Thailand, with a small purchase. rates were not compelling (putting it nicely).
its just for convenience, and small purchases. Waiting for next statement to see if they will tack on (SOP) additional fees

Among the banks in SG, they r the 1st with alipay+ and now wechat pay... good but I will continue with my youtrip with alipay or wechat pay due to rates.

Alipay and WeChat are super apps and have more than payments. They can be used for metro and Didi, scan qr at restaurants to order food etc. Unless there's really value no point downloading more apps.

Yes, it's for redundancy since the FX rate isn't great.
If there's additional fees that it's really for last resort kind of choice.

Agreed, more for redundancy than anything else since what's paramount is the FX rate.

yeah, wanna see what exchange rate and additional fees that may be charged.
a lousy rate and additional fees may turn out to be more than the spending points, as compared to other benefits from say, Youtrip.

Yup, last resort redundancy on one level (once after several days of small purchases in GZ and SZ, suddenly Youtrip already verified and linked on Alipay and Wechatpay, barfed and refused to work).

Roaming IP block is another issue, more frustrating, but that's another issue.

What this OCBC feature provides is the means to scan QR codes of all types in China, without having to download, install and verify Chinese payment apps like Alipay and WeChat. This, to me, carries value in itself, since no other e-wallet app can, and I am willing to accept a slightly worse exchange rate.

You will have to read up the discussion in this thread before my post, or the other Alipay thread. The feature on the OCBC app is not for this purpose. You can test if it works though, if your recipient flashes his or her personal QR code and you scan with your OCBC app. I don't think it will work unless it's for a business entity and you are in China. After all, the government over there is not going to open the floodgate for money to be returned to the mainland after it gets spun overseas. Correct me if I am wrong.

Unfortunately, it is only for foreign recipients with WeChat wallet. Still waiting for an opportunity for a platform able to top up own wallet.

likely only work in 1st tier city like shanghai. Once you go to places like daocheng yading or highway resting station and want to buy a sausage for 5rmb, it will not work

The QR codes are all the same. Likewise, the mechanism for it to work, wherever you are, whether it is this app or that.
