What NAS to get?

I am using an Asustor NAS, so far so good. For me I am using a non-RAID configuration but with scheduled backups from one drive to another twice a week. I think this is a simpler solution than RAID since it doesn't affect the whole drive (e.g. If you only need to backup selected folders) and allows more flexibility in the event you want to change systems down the road. And it gives you a window to restore files in the event that you accidentally delete something

this works well only for people who is willing to do the extra mile.

Most people only want a single device to do everything without having to connect more devices - with your connection, discipline is also required to maintain that schedule (although one can schedule it as well)

yours is i would say is more of a backup.

Yeah. I might do something like this too. Cause I'm not too concern for majority of the data also. Mostly media.

Eh. Can't quote all but for those talking about qnap ts 453a. What's the price for 4 bay ah? I see lazada put so expensive but like is pro version. Or I find wrongly?

And regarding the qnap. Can plug HDMI directly to TV and play media? If can then this is one of my big consideration also as my Nas will most likely be beside my TV only.

But does qnap has the feature of the backup file history like synology?

Ok, I think I narrowed down to this couple of model.

Both ASUSTOR AS5004T and QNAP TS-451+ a little out of budget at that pricing (based on Lazada). But nevertheless, will include into consideration for now.

AS3204T is newer model, seem great, but not upgradable for memory.
AS3104T is somewhat the same as 3204 except that it's dual core.
DS416 doesn't have HDMI so although the DSM is great but HDMI kinda a big deal for my consideration so most of the Synology should be out of picture for now.

QNAP one are quite expensive, though with HDMI also.
ASUSTOR has but should I get the 3204T or 5004T model? Or other recommended model?

Well.. having a hdmi is not really a concern as one can easily sync videos across to tv if your tv is connected to the network as well.

There are media box that does that too.

Alternatively you can also wirelessly sync to TV too with things like miracast or Chromecast.

dont waste your money. instead of buy a nas, get 2x8tb hdd and mirror in windows. NAS is kinda useless unless u use iscsi provided that your nas have this feature.

if your nas die, u need o buy another similar nas to retrieve your data ( more money). If your windows/pc die, just plug in your hdd to another pc and you can access your data again.

Hmm. Why I consider HDMI is because my TV doesn't have lan or wireless feature. Hence HDMI is my only connection. I watch media quite often as is my brother. So having HDMI would allow me to watch through my Nas easily.

I don't intend to get media box. Chrome cast is any option but wirelessly kind of relay on wireless network speed etc so yea.

Budget is a concern, but not that tight. It's just a rough estimation. But of course not exceeding too much.

The same logic goes for don't buy car, house etc cause all can build yourself. Nas can build yourself and setup but requires much more effort which I don't really wants.

For me a NAS is storage solution which I can access from all devices.. My own cloud storage for all my data not relying on external cloud services with much higher capacity.

Of course I can buy multiple HDD and plug it to my main system. Considering I have 3 home systems I have plenty of local storage systems. I tried building my own NAS using freenas but the requirements for running a ZFS file system together the cost was as much as most current commercial NAS. Also the system would be very power hungry which was another consideration for a NAS. I didn't want a full computer running 24/7.

NAS from synology, QNAP have a very good interface with tools built right it. I dont have a configure for hours like I had to do with a freeNAS system.

Example of current setup
Main computer with 1 512gb SSD and 2 2TB HDD, 1 3TB HDD. I go on a diving trip and come back with a set of videos and photos. I work on them from my local computer then it gets archived to the NAS.
I can access the NAS on my laptop to access the same files and work on the website while being away from the main desktop.
I can be travelling in another country and still access my files on my phone. The NAS is not just an external storage.

Another example I watch TV shows and movies streamed from my NAS via Plex while travelling. Just need wifi and and my tablet.

sure... enjoy!! I would normally take a 2tb external 2.5inch hdd with me while i travel... not stream or sync over the internet... sorry guys but internet in s'pore is not the same at overseas and have data limit.

DIY NAS is hard to match those like Synology, Qnap, Asustor, etc in the area of low power. As NAS is expected to run 24x7, need to keep the wattage low to save cost.

My backup is done automatically by the NAS twice a week so it doesn't really take any effort on my part...

Guess I will get asustor as3204t. Qnap too expensive. As5 series also.

Unless still have other recommendations or concern on this? I read much of the reviews and seem pretty above average I think.

Eh just to double check (with 4 bay nas) that it is possible to put in a single disk.
then buy 2nd disk and setup as raid 1.
then buy 3rd disk but setup a standalone disk.
then buy 4th disk and upgrade to raid 5.

can like that do as u increase the amt of disk over time? will it be complicated or just like a click of button?
