What NAS to get?

Not too sure. Just that I remember seeing others recommending it over over brand. That's why checking.

If money is a constraint, go for Toshiba definitely value for money and is 7200rpm

Eh just to double check (with 4 bay nas) that it is possible to put in a single disk.
then buy 2nd disk and setup as raid 1.
then buy 3rd disk but setup a standalone disk.
then buy 4th disk and upgrade to raid 5.

can like that do as u increase the amt of disk over time? will it be complicated or just like a click of button?

If traditional raid. No. U have to wipe everything off.

Synology has SHR to do such config, other brands not too sure.

shrugs, meaning best to get all drive first and setup the raid at once? instead of getting one by one. else i have to wipe all each time i change the raid config right.

aiyoh, i used 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, 5TB all bo taiji. >2 years.

well, if you getting other brands i not sure so best bet is to set up the raid at once with the hdd ready.

thanks for the help all along. yea, most of my disk are all working strong after years. not too worried about that.

currently still torn between synology and asustor. though more or less settled on asustor for now.

Used to have the asustor as backup for my main synology nas.. my take is the os is laggy and limited addins also the NAS is hotter as compared to Synology.

But they should hv improved after so long i guess

Read the review seem to be alright now. But dsm still is the best software now on the market.

Sorry to hijack, can I check, I'm looking to get a NAS for home usage, probably to store files and backup. Will also be using together with a HTPC to play movies on TV. Will the budget asustor as1002t be sufficient? does the ram on the NAS matter alot, will the 512mb be sufficient?

Not an expert (in fact I just got a nas few weeks ago) but just my opinion:

For your usage, which is using the nas strictly as an external storage accessible via network/internet, should be OK. Since you have a HTPC to be the workhorse for playing movies.

Note that if you want to use the NAS to stream movies to your TV or mobile devices, then this won't do (CPU not enough juice).

If transcoding is required CPU juice very important. If you want to have many apps running, memory is important.

If can, get a NAS that supports transcoding capability so that it will minimize your CPU juice.

The same logic goes for don't buy car, house etc cause all can build yourself. Nas can build yourself and setup but requires much more effort which I don't really wants.

Understand it will be cheaper.

dont waste your money. instead of buy a nas, get 2x8tb hdd and mirror in windows. NAS is kinda useless unless u use iscsi provided that your nas have this feature.

if your nas die, u need o buy another similar nas to retrieve your data ( more money). If your windows/pc die, just plug in your hdd to another pc and you can access your data again.

if using an external htpc, even my Synology DS211 bought 4 years ago can handle that easily because you are only talking about transferring that media file to your htpc to play (via VLC for example).

Currently I'm using my phone to connect to my NAS to stream shows to my Chomecast plugged to my TV. The DS211 is more than enough. The concern now for me is not sure when it will break down.

However, if you wish to install more apps into your NAS, surely processor speed and ram will play a part, though may not be a dealbreaker. The most wait a bit longer lor..haha. For example I run btsync on my NAS, no doubt a bit slow but still ok la...

Don't go 1TB
GB/dollar makes little sense. The most value for money at the moment is 3GB.

I personally feel, don't buy into the purple, red branding of NAS drives. Unless you are running a 24/7 heavy usage, any decent drives will do.

HDD preference largely stems on your preference. You only have Hitachi, Western Digital and Seagate to choose from. Hitachi spins the fastest and eats the most power. WD and Seagate spins at the 5000rpm region.

hooted a couple of 3tb seagate constellation drives used with approx 2.5 years warranty remaining for 230, which means 115 per piece, praying that they will last in the long run

I bought the Asustor 3202T few weeks ago. Indeed the NAS is 'hot'. The ventilation and airflow is sub-optimal. My HGST hdds were 51-53 deg C most of the time. Eventually I opened up the case and left it naked, with external USB fan blowing at it. Now the hdd temp is 33-35 deg C. I felt much better lol.

But I like the NAS overall. The ADM works smooth. The HDMI out is useful for direct connection to TV (that's the main reason I went for Asustor, the other factor is the pricing). I still don't know how to use the HTTPS as the cert thingy is confusing to me (I tried but gave up).

You need a cert for it... Not that confusing though.
