What should I do when purchasing a second hand rig?

Am pretty much a noob IT wise, recently saw a second hand gamkng rig that I wanted to purchase. Most items are covered by warranty but how do I go about checking that each component is in good working condition? Thanks in advance.

The specs is very off balance. Locked i5 on a overclocking mobo. So much power yet the system only need a 550/650w only at most.

This rig is prepared for sli gtx 1080 and changing the processor to an unlocked one for overclocking.

If you're not familiarize with spec, look for a more basic one.

Are there any problems when the psu is too high powered? I have a 4k TV so I could potentially get another 1080 for SLI (4k 60fps). For single 1080 I can play at qhd 60fps for many games am I right?
For CPU I was actually planning to build one with a ryzen 5 1600 before I saw this build going for around 2k

I'd estimate a rig cost around this much from SLS without Processor/Mobo. Prices are off the top of my head, not checking directly from price lists so could be slightly off.

You can do the math yourself to see if its worth, personally I don't feel the cost savings is enough to warrant buying second-hand. I'd get this with a Ryzen CPU.

PSU too much power bad for your pockets Cost more upfront and slightly less efficient as the PSU not running at peak efficiency (Somewhere around 50% load if I remember correctly)

the answer is whether the price is right?
1.calculate the price offer minus the warranty left
2.Ask for 2nd opinion for part recommend for ur new prefered build here
3.compare the price of the 2nd hand PC and the new suggested PC

if the price less around $100 compare new build would it worth it for u?

Saw that set, the case is enthoo evolv atx tempered glass right? That case is $299 brand new with asus ac68 pcie wireless adaptor. I think quite worth but ask him for personal warranty.

Zotac 1080 AMP editions $869 (wanted to get an rx580 but... still deciding between the 1070 & 1080, maybe even wait for vega?)

Gskill ripjaws V 2666mhz 8x2 $215 (was told no point getting 3000 due to mobo compatability?)

Samsung evo 850 256gb $159 (do i need 500?)

Toshiba 1tb 7200rpm $63

FSP Hyper K 600w 80+ $79

Any affordable case $80

Fan (if needed) $20

Total: 1070/1080 $1755/$1955

This is without win10

If I pay $45 more for the second hand build, I'll get a higher end mobo which apparently has sound issues? Slightly slower speed ram, double the ssd capacity, way higher end PSU, his case is a phantex enthu evolv atx tempered glass case which costs way more, win 10, and a Asus pce ac68 Wifi adapter.

However the main loss will be the 1 year less warranty compared to building brand new.

Very tough for me to decide :///

Yup I did ask, but he said the parts could be swapped out so he wasn't willing to?

I'm actually not very particular about aesthetics, feel like the 299 will be wasted on me :/

1070 is sufficient for 1080p. If you want to game on your 4k display then definitely get the 1080. Can wait for vega also.

RAM speed gives performance boost for Ryzen. Not a ryzen user so don't know whether the speed is supported atm.

SSD if you have a lot of games to store can get 500GB, personally for me 250GB is enough. Can always uninstall the games that you don't play anymore.

Windows 10 can get from Carousell <$20 at your own risk. Working fine for me though.

Only thing you can do
1) Go to his house to test that it is working by running benchmark
2) Make sure everything is still under warranty

That's all you can do.
Hardware failure is heng suay one.
Can happen anytime.

Buy used if dirt cheap or from a friend who will troubleshoot for you on account of friendship.

General rule is it must be at least 50 percent off retail.

Thanks all, seems like general idea is building my own is safer. Any feedback on my build? I might go the ultra wide route, any opinions about 1080 ultrawide vs 1440?

Are there any well priced 1080 144hz gsync displays out there in sg market? A 1070 can make use of a 2560x1080 display right?

1070 is good enough for 2560x1080.....even 2560x1440 (2k) monitor is good enough
ur budget is below $2k from the look of it...u may try to ask for suggestion for that price budget here

But if I want to push closer to 144fps I think 1070 won't be powerful enough right

If you're settling for High settings 2k 144hz,you will need gtx 1080 or even the 1080 ti. Depending what games you're playing.

2560X1080 @ 144Hz - GTX 1070 is good enough even at ultra settings (without supersampling).
