buy philips or panasonic. they are the easiest ones to crack region code.

但系只限于DVD部分可以改全区。
飞利浦如果全区跳番单区，仲可以用原配遥控，揾密码改回全区。Sony RCE DVD可以玩。
松下就要通过特别型号遥控，打暗码改全区。。。。。。Sony RCE DVD唔一定全部机款玩得。

No Love for the BR player?

Excuse me for digging this thread up... we have just gotten our first 4K tv (had previously used FHD tv) and I was wondering... do ppl usually get a Blu-Ray player nowadays to make better use of its 4K/FHD capabilities? Or do ppl still prefer to just get a DVD player that upscales the resolution of DVDs to (just) Full HD?

I think nowadays people just make do with streaming 4k and skip physical media. I've been on the rocks on getting a bluray player for the past 2 years, but the costs of physical discs (esp 4K HDR) puts me off..since there's none I'd really like to have.
I'll make do with the compressed "good enough" Netflix/Amazon Prime streams for now
Maybe i'll get a bluray player when the 4K LOTR is released

Now that you have finally reached UHD, the minimum is a Blu Ray player, please get a BR player.
The 4k players aren't much more, but the bare minimum is a BR player.
Upscaling does NOT give you HD or UHD...

Previously i was googling on Blu-ray player, then chanced upon people feedback the player cannot recognise atmos and no audio out from spks and player will show some wording to notify user.
Thus i think you better bring a Blu-ray with atmos and then go ask to test it before buy.
In SG, after u part your money, it’s difficult to return back.
And so far OPPO player is the best, eat watever u throw at it.

If your player can bitstream, it will send out TruHD and your AVR is what process Atmos.
Issues arise with the apps within the player, not the discs.
Oppo players are no longer in production.

That depends on your sound system and whether you are hard on over picture & sound quality? Do you have a sound system? Soundbar/Separate speakers or just TV speakers?
If you are just using TV speakers and are fine with that means you don't really care much, so just get a cheap TV box will do. You can stream compressed files/netflix.

If you do care and want to get a proper system, you will need at least a decent soundbar and a TV box/UHD player. UHD discs aren't that expensive if you get from Amazon during sales. As low as SGD8-12 each. Sony UBP-X700 is a decent choice.

Of you could go the pirate way and download the UHDs and play them via TV box. UHD players could also play files via usb, but i wouldn't recommend it.

You can't tell from the physical set.
I have a low end sony blu ray player from last year
and the sales rep told me ita DVD playback is locked.

In this era, don't know why would anyone play DVD despite
it is cheaper than Blu ray.

- Poor picture quality (Not full HD)
- Compressed Surround sound either Dolby Digital or DTS
- DVD are lock at region 3

Rent/buy Blu ray which are region free playable on most blu ray player.
Netflix will be better than DVD.
Unlock DVD player are a thing of the past you won't be able to find
new sets locally except online.
