Honestly I think whether which notebook one like to buy is very personal. Just search for ASUS July 2013 product guide and u will see it. Every one has their own option including professional so do not take it so hard.

well... i be honest with you, be it Acer/MSI/Asus/HP/Dell/Sony/Toshiba/Fujitsu or even Apple, when it comes to electronic products, its really up to luck. ;)

I have friends like you who use Acer for donkey years and only few issues, less normal wear and tear. and of course there are those extreme cases whereby, almost all possible issues happen on one lappie within a few weeks or months of purchase. Similarly for Apple, Sony, Asus etc...

I'm surprised they send someone down to your home to fix it...

back to your topic ;)
usually when I have zero-ed in on a few lappies to buy, I will do extensive research through ebay, Amazon youtube and pc forums to find out about the quality of the product, especially on day-to-day usage. then I will drop by Funan to physically test the lappies myself

Manufacturers can spec higher tolerances in the components such as caps, resistors etc for greater reliability.

Other than that, engineering design also play a part. For example, heat pipes or specially engineered system cooling can ensure longer operation due to better heat removal efficiency.

Some manufacturers will spec lower for components to cut cost, so, you will see higher failure rates overall.

HP is 1 yr and extended warranty is cheap at $199 but they will retain the notebook for 3 days if send for servicing. For ASUS they usually fix it in front of u and can get it back immediately after they fix it. They even change my notebook keyboard for me. That is why I strongly recommend ASUS and buy only ASUS. For ASUS some model like A45, A55, N series and others are 2 yrs.

Asus service turnaround time is 3-5 days in their protocol. If they are no parts, it takes around 10-14 days.
On the spot is only applicable for exchanges, i.e only for battery, adaptor exchanges (i.e provided they have stocks).

For notebook keyboard fixing, they have recently remove the fix in front of customer thing as many laptop keyboards needs to be open up the whole lappie, unlike those older design ones which needs to open only 3-4 screws to access to the keyboard.

Nevertheless, their service is still reasonably good. :)

Anyway, for TS information, N56 is replaced by N550 with touchscreen selling for $1898.

My money goes to 3 brands based on my experience.

1. Lenovo - Probably the best in value
2. Asus
3. Toshibha

The rest are no go for me and my recommendation. HP always seems very cheap, but their laptops of late have proven to be unreliable. I boycott them after the 2 HP laptops at home had so many issues. Me and my sister are sending it back almost every half yearly, like going to dentist man... Its worst than Acer. Then my bro in law's HP had the same issue and died slightly past 1 year. To be honest, I rather go for Acer if I only have 2 choices.

its really all abt ur luck whether u get a lemon set..

acer last time build quality not so good, not sure now. so far i have used a acer which after 1-2 years the screen had the flickering issue someone mentioned earlier. Sent it for repair, they had to replace the whole motherboard and now its still working fine 3yrs later. but the laptop screen bezel popping out in some places, dont affect use but shows poor build quality.

my current is a asus 14 inch similar to the one TS listed 15 inch ver. so far no problems, and very satisfied with performance, weight and thinness. word of advice dont touch any of the drivers or software included. even if its nt the latest version must live with it.

for HP i hear their harddisk is always giving problems. a few friends using HP have had their harddisk crash as little as 6 months using the laptop. some also report crashes and BSOD like on desktops with insufficient watts power supply.

I'd say wait for haswell and get phenomenal battery life :D

HP laptop dun hv HDD inside? im nt sure what brand they use but they always seem to fail inside of HP laptops.

the brand they used. Ultimately the blame should be shouldered by the manufacturer of the hdd not the notebook manufacturer.

i only have issues with seagate. Any brand uses seagate, the hdd is bound to die.

the reason i blame HP is bcos, to a certain extent, they have control over what goes into their laptops and if they choose to put less reliable drives then its their fault.

yes totally agreed. I have traditionally bought only hitachis cos theyre price competitive and have good performance (something like WD Black but without the overprice). Decided to try Seagate once bcos that week happen that seagate was cheaper by abit. Regretted. 1yr mark spoil, RMA drive spoil 2 weeks after warranty end. On the other hand I have a hitachi 160gb still running fine:D

Acer sucks nowadays just look at what they are selling for that price.
A few years ago they were packing powerful components at competitive prices, now expensive and weak components.
Off my list.
