I think there's no disappointment in the upcoming desktop product it should be good without the need to chase a higher core count envelope within a dual channel memory platform. It's just a disappointment with their strategy on relentlessly chasing the small retail processor market (PIB) for far too long when Gartner numbers are on average 60-70+million PC shipments per quarter and there's no question PCs are dominated by notebooks?
By not creating a competitive mobile product (with working switchable graphics aka optimus toggle, manufacturers can run a mobile nvidia card with, good battery life) that brings in big design wins and staying in the near "craptop segment", they're always going to be the very small guy in the client pc segment since it's not going to bring in much more income to build better products in the future. The last iGP that has a working MUXless graphics switching driver was GCN mobile, not mobile vega.
All the major ODMs that bring in volume in China and Taiwan that build laptops for Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus etc. (Wistron, Pegatron, Quanta, Compal etc) are fully backing lakefield and already strengthening Intel's mobile stronghold. What about Picasso? AMD doesn't really need more of mindfactory.de, amazon.com or newegg.com but real wins in notebook product lines instead of just a handful of experimental models.
