PAP used to have a policy "growth at all cost" .. ya.. that is partially fulfilled by LHL's open leg immgration policy that saw double digit growth of foreigners for 2 consecutive years in 2007 and 2008 (go check census).... that was the time when cheap labor flood into SG and Malaysians and even mainland Chinese (esp those who studied in SG), get PR with 3 months.. AND , PR can buy flat DIRECT from HDB.
PR also entitled CDC. :(

Of course it is all about the money.

If ban cigarettes now, need to increase GST by about 2% to recover the lost taxes

Singapore has about 1+ million smokers including foreigners.

The statistic for per smoker is average 13 cigarettes sticks a day, that is 4745 cigarette sticks per year.

One cigarette duty is now 59 cents means duty collected on average a year is 2.8 billions from 1 million smokers

Total GST collected in 2025 is 20 billion sgd so to now collect GST amount to 22.8 billion to make up for the shortfall from tobacco duty means a 2% increase in GST

We have not even taken into account foreign smoker workforce who decide to quit their jobs and move out of SG. This will have a tremendous short term effect on our economy GDP which even if increase GST by 10-20% cannot negate the productivity $$ lost to the economy (even if it is for short term)

so yes, it is not possible to suddenly ban smoking.

SG can ban chewing gum.
SG can ban Vape.

But cannot ban cigarette.
Littering problem. health problem. Air pollution problem. created more problems than chewing gum and vape combine.

Is it really all about money?
FTs need smoking

We should invite good quality tourists. Not these kind of dirty smoker tourists.

Ts probably never go to the casino before.
Both mbs and rws have state of the art ciggy smoke filtering system.
If you've been to, you would know that smokers area are as big as non smoking areas.
If you ban cig, youre not just losing tobacco tax, youre dealing with unhappy population, smuggling issues and drastic drop in entertainment revenue.
It's economics, nothing personal.

Obviously TS totally simple minded dunno nothing bout the impact of banning thing.

1) 2% increase in GST to make up for lost duties

2)Economy upheaval from short term labour lost and replacement (many type difficult to replace with non smokers too as low level labourous type of workers have mostly smokers doing the jobs)meaning job losses

3) Tourism lost with confirmed lesser tourists vs a maybe more tourists (cannot be counted on) that suddenly decide cos sg ban smoking is good to come.

4) PAP suddenly have to deal with a very unhappy 800k+ local smokers

5) Many other side effects

SG ban chewing gums, vape and even drugs yet now all these can still be seen and found

Banning is one thing, enforcing is another thing. Since difficult to enforce, might as well allow and tax them gao gao

I have given up hope that smoking will be banned
Only hope G keep increasing the tobacco duties to discourage consumption while collecting more taxes

this trend of DEI woke people banning this and that : are you sure you know what you're getting into .

Ban because it doesnt suit you ?

or ban because your ex-ditch ?

so far theres no logical reason for a outright ban case, like vape

Not for ownself. For the general public.

The non-smoking population is higher than the smoking population.

If cannot can.

Than atleast make them smoke indoor only. Designated smoking booth. Keep all their smoke inside the booth.
