High coe shld be tied indirectly to public transport cost . Meaning coe shld help to subsidise public transport since it was always quoted that no car take public transport theory.

Generally spore public transport quite good now when more trains line are added, much more efficient.

In Sg, car is a want not a need. See whether u willingly to pay for it. If retired and seldom drive, dont see the need for it.

Agreed... Lucky live beside mrt. One fine day I think my health don't allow me to drive safety... Is either I pass to my kids or give up driving.. For those who like driving/riding like me... Hard to give up

COE is good. Help limit cars. You just see the number of people complaining it is too expensive, this is an indicator that many people want to drive but cost helps to reduce the demand
Ban 100 percent loan. Ask gov to ban private loan. Promise to jail CEO if found them doing it

This will not go well with the rich, govn serves to please the rich here, not poor. Most of their policies do not matter to the rich, only the poor.

BMW 7 already 600k, what's another 50k to the rich?
which is why i do not believe in COE or stamp duties. does nothing to affect the wealthy. wanna reduce, limit to 1 car per household with legit justifications to own more than 1. of course with full COE and additional COE stamp duties just for the kicks

Go green but encourage owning cars that are unused n leads to waste.such hypocrisy
Money talks.... And they only drive one car a day... Most are collectables. Went a few GCBs for survey before... You see the collections, are the wet dreams of 80/90s. Celica gt4/Evos, M3/5 and etc.

I quote:

Headline reads -
S'pore's Budget surplus derived from COE premiums, personal income tax & state investment returns

First para reads -
The Singapore government collected S$6.54 billion from the certificate of entitlement (COE) auctions in fiscal year 2024, which is S$1.82 billion or 38.5 per cent higher than the estimated figure.

Source:https://mothership.sg/2025/02/budget-surplus-areas/

What motivation does the gov have to scrap/remove it?

U know, one way to immediately disable a significant % of population from owning a car is to pass a law that only allows Singapore Citizen to purchase a car.

It's really not that radical I mean... We are citizens here in our country. Why can't the right to own a car be left for SC only? If u really want to stretch it, then SC+PR.

We are at 5.9mil population, of which 4.1mil is Singapore Residents (SC + PR).

If foreigners can't buy BTO, then it's not a radical idea to extend that to car ownership.

There are many ways to resolve this but they just don't want to. Can't blame them. Look at how stuffed the coffers are with this.

Limited availability - anyone will be unhappy if he feels entitled and not getting it. Bidding is an option to allow those who can afford to have it - doesn’t that apply to other material things in SG? If taxes have to come from somewhere COE is probably the most justifiable?
