it's true that it is NZ's best wine export. NZ SB basically put them on the map.

Sauvignon Blanc breakthrough
New Zealand is home to what many wine critics consider the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. Oz Clarke, a well-known British wine critic wrote in the 1990s that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was "arguably the best in the world" (Rachman). Historically, Sauvignon Blanc has been used in many French regions in both AOC and Vin de Pays wine. The most famous had been France’s Sancerre. It is also the grape used to make Pouilly Fumé.

Following Robert Mondavi's lead in renaming Californian Sauvignon Blanc Fumé Blanc (partially in reference to Pouilly Fumé and partially to denote the smokiness of the wine produced due to flinty soil properties and partial oak barrel ageing) there was a trend for oaked Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand during the late 1980s. Later the fashion for strong oaky overtones and also the name waned.

In the 1980s, wineries in New Zealand, especially in the Marlborough region, began producing outstanding, some critics said unforgettable, Sauvignon Blanc. "New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is like a child who inherits the best of both parents—exotic aromas found in certain Sauvignon Blancs from the New World and the pungency and limy acidity of an Old World Sauvignon Blanc like Sancerre from the Loire Valley" (Oldman, p. 152). One critic said that drinking one's first New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was like having sex for the first time (Taber, p. 244). "No other region in the world can match Marlborough, the northeastern corner of New Zealand's South Island, which seems to be the best place in the world to grow Sauvignon Blanc grapes" (Taber, p. 244).

although i would still maintain that Taber's comments on NZ being the best place to grow SB is still just an opinion. =:p

personally my first loves are german rieslings and spanish reds. i like many other regions as well like the Loire, rhone valley, tuscany, specific aussie regions, sonoma in california etc...

i think it's a matter of tasting widely and as much as possible to know what u really like.

i do look at years as well and it's good to know which vintage generally is good. but if u stick to the good producers, they still make good wines even in 'poor' vintages.

being to locked in into vintages can give us a bit of myopia as well. 2002 bordeaux was not a very good vintage for most people, but for the top chateaux, a lot of their wines are drinking very nicely now. they're not meant for long aging compared to a regular bordeaux in a 'good' vintage, but they are tasting well at 10 years of age.

Had a very lovely bottle; 2009 Domaine des Senechaux Chateauneuf-du-Pape, had to let it stand for about an hour before it really opened up. Sweet spices, not too heavy, smooth well balanced wine. Loved the finish, it was just right for me, a medium length finish.

I did not pair it with any food; I usually do not eat when I drink; would love to pair my wine with cheese though.

that's nice. where'd u buy it from and for how much?

u should try to having meals with wine. it can elevate the wine and food to different levels, especially with the right pairings :)

I usually do my wines at Straits, I did not really remember the price as I wanted a Grenache based wine.

With regards to the pairing with food; hmmmm, I got to try that some time and find the right pair with the wine.

I have another target in mind on my next session, a Barolo.

barolo's are nice but the best ones need quite a number of years for it to get to its peak.

next time u can join us for our sessions where we bring wines and have a meal too.

Dropped by Suntec C4 last night, lots of the Loire wines are back. They must have kept them in the warehouse for the time being.

There were red Loire wines from Saumur-Champigny, Anjou Villages and Touraine < $20, the Ch Brillette 07, 08 and 09 vintages as well as Grenache, Carrignan and CdR wines from Le Plan. I think the Brillette 07 is a good buy at $29, for early drinking. Time to buy - if you can avoid the crowds!

I do wish to keep some Château de Fesles especially the Bonnezeaux. I have not try any of them. Is C4 having sales for Loire too?

Yeah I love those bonnezeaux. The '96s '99s and '05s are good. The dry chenin 'la chappelle' is very mineral driven and structured.

Oh no, now more people online know about it and will chiong for it! Haha...Don't miss out on the sparkling alsace cremants and cote du Layon sweet style wines from the Loire.

Huh, 10% POSB Everyday card discount applies to both C4s all along what...

10% - 5% card rebate + 5% direct discount. So the 5% off should be on your receipt.
