I popped in Robinsons yesterday.

Lumina (Thai) set of 6 Burgundy wine glass (short stem) goes for $76 or about $12.5 each
Lumina set of 6 (long stem) goes for $96 or about $16 each
Schott Zweisel (German) set of 2 goes for $35 or $17.50 each
Riedel (German) set of 2 goes for $72 or $36 each.
Spiegelau (German) set of 2 goes for $32 or $16 each.
RCR (Italian) set of 2 goes for $92 or $46 each.

All are long stems except for the first lumina which is shorter by about 1.5".

Spiegelau is quite a good buy. The stem is not straight through but has a bit of contour. Feels good to handle. Might buy a pair during the next Robinsons sale.

During sales the price remains but you can use $5 voucher (given out for free to Robinsons OCBC CC holder) for items $30 and above.

Riedel has a fantastic range of decanter and carafe. Work of art. But the price is in a different league. The more artsy pieces goes above $400.

I've Ikea, Lumina, Schott and Riedel glasses. Riedel gets the most mileage and has the best feel even compared to Schott. Lumina is basically unused unless there's a gathering. Ikea is meant more for picnics.

If you're looking at 6 glasses or less, just splash out on the Riedel - you won't regret it. As Lumina is made of glass, the optical clarity is not too good and the clinging sound it makes is completely "dead". RCR's glasses are made of lead crystal but the shape and finishing is very ordinary. Spiegelau may be a good choice if you are on a budget as it is the sister company of Riedel, producing lower range glasses.

it's been a while but here is my new entry. time to re-think about Rose wine:

http://wineofthepeople.livejournal.com/11932.html
Nice! I had a bottle of 3-stones rose NZ Sauv blanc a few weeks ago and the extra bit of sharpness cuts through seafood beautifully. I was at 1855 on fri night and we had a magnum of Chateau Beaumont 06. Really easy to drink for the price. Wonderful bouquet upon opening but flat initially. Needs about 1 hour to open up. Bought 2 magnums as it's good VFM.

yeah it's a nice place. you should try their american wines. i've had some of these producers when i was in the US earlier this year. pricier in SG but good quality US wine.

but the seating area is quite little right? if it's about 8-10 people full house liao. unless u can do the standing type of chilling then ok.

for those who wanna know, u can drink at 1855, just pay the price of the bottle and top up $2 per person drinking. price is nett.

one a side note: crap man...got four more bottles coming in end of the month/1st week nov, and i have literally run out of space. going to drink a bottle on tuesday dinner but need to clear at least 3 more...but they're not ready for drinking yet (according to my spreadsheet)

Hi, can check with you - from your posting, your Rose from 1855 is drank immed. at Imperial that night? Or kept & drank 24 hours later? --> Am interested to taste the difference of "fresh" wine when immed opened and of "24hrs later" wine

My gfs had a $28 COTES DE PROVENCE AOC - Rose - Les Maitres Vignerons de St-Tropez (Grape: Grenache / Cinsault) from Wine Connection... not to their taste...

Was wondering if 2009 Turkey Flat Rose can change their minds?

I popped it and let it sit in the ice bath for about 30-45 minutes. Then consumed over the next hour. Left about 1/4 bottle, screwed the cap back on and brought home. Kept it in the fridge for about 24 hours and drank it next day with my dinner at home. I liked it even better 24 hours later.

but by no means is it a hard and fast rule. i was just curious to see how it developed.

that i cannot say as I have not had the Cotes de Provence Rose you mentioned, so I can't say the difference. perhaps you should ask your gf(s) why they didn't like it so that you can get a better understanding of their palate.

Yes, the place is pretty small with only 3 tables. Enough to sit only up to 12 comfortably.

Time to buy a bigger wine chiller? ;)

Okies thanks for sharing. likewise, never try the WC's too. but i shall go find that Turkey... within budget lah :s13:

I tried the Loredona Riesling.... it has a "dry" throat feeling. Is it just me?
The Deetlets Semillion-Sauvignon Blanc has a "grassy" taste too.... Is it just me?
I was like :s11: alcoholic grass juice?!? Did anyone ever have this type of feeling?

i have not tried the Loredona Riesling, I have only tried their 06 Pinot Grigio and 06 Pinot Noir.

as for Deetlefs, it's more of an entry level South African producer. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough is known for it's grassy profile; maybe the Deetlefs one you had just had a lot of of this specific flavour profile. If it's too over the top with the grassiness then perhaps it's not a balanced wine.

to be honest, as a general advice, you should stay away from the regular NTUC FairPrice labels. There only a few of them IMO that are worth the money, most of them is the super entry level stuff that doesn't let you experience decent wine. you should 'trade-up' a little or purchase wines from NTUC Finest or something. Keep in mind you don't have to spend alot, you can get good wines in the $30s and sometimes in the $20s; hence always look out for promos and sales by retailers and distributors.

that being said, it's good that you at least 'practice' and expand your palate with any wine that you see; but over time you will realize for yourself which are the general producers/regions/styles that are more worth your money and suited to your palate.

Thanks! Will drop by to look see look see.... Last weekend went to No Sign board (GL) for dinner... brought the wine New zealand, Hawkers bay Gewurztraminer for dinner.. NO Corkage and they provide Ice bucker. Goes Quite well with Dinner.

Strong Lychee after taste which is rather refreshing, most impt is the taste of the wine changes with different food...

not all promos are the same. have seen the same wine on promo at 2 diff places but the price diff can be as much as $10 due to diff usual price.

also i think quite often the discounts are not given by say carrefour, giant, cold storage, ntuc, etc. but instead by the distributor. a lot of times the same wine is on promo at all super/hypermarts.

i will be having dinner with some of my uni friends this evening at Saizeriya, Liang Court. Nothing fancy and very affordable. Plus corkage is $5. Glassware isn't that great but it will suffice.

Will be bringing a 2005 Fattoria Le Fonti Chianti Classico from Italy. I bought this after tasting it during the 2009 World Gourmet Summit Chianti Fair. Hopefully it's as good as I remember; according to the producer it's mostly the typical Sangiovese grape with a touch of Merlot. I will let it bottle breathe in office today after lunch for about 6 hours.
