when u buy from a distributor or retailer i guess it doesn't hurt to ask if you can get a couple of those wine cases.

but i know enoteca at Taka sells them at $10 a piece (which is a rip-off)

last night drank a 2001 Basedow Semillon, Barossa Valley. A 10 year old white wine made from 100% Semillon grapes in the Barossa Valley, Australia. If you ever get the chance, do purchase a couple of good semillons from australia (especially those from Hunter Valley) and let them age. These guys can last; while they may start off citrusy and light, as they age, they take on a golden brown hue and start to develop toastier elements and also gives a rounder mouthfeel. And compared to most other white wines from other regions that can age, Hunter Valley Semillon can be considered cheap with top Semillons retailing for less than $100 in SG.

hi guys, i'm at the vivo city wine fest! drank the italian...

Cool, what wines to they have there?
Wanted to go there today but couldn't squeeze out the time.

Btw D'Arenberg wines on sale past week at NTUC, around $30 each. Bought the Original and 100% Grenache Custodian to try, but the Footbolt Shiraz is sold out at most places, can't seem to find it! S'poreans love their Shiraz eh?

I'm ok for Italian outing. You all still up for it? Seems like not many new peeps :p

yeah we should get more people to join. ask around your friends if they are interested :) maybe HWZ people in general are not the wine type, they are are just the makan type. either way we're always open to more people to join.

as for the date, could we push it to next weekend? i might need some downtime after my reservist.

@reign: what wines did u like the best during the vivocity tasting?

I practically went all out to try, and Imho, i prefer the Blason de bourgogne, Chablis from France! The rest are rather light for my preference.

For the Italian wine, i tried till my tongue got Numb...still not used to the non sweetness of this wine.. and YES... rather Tanic

we are fine postphoned to 02/10/11.

Managed to catch the wine fair yesterday evening, about an hour before it closed. As most wine fairs go, so much wine, and so little time!

No real surprises in terms of labels, these are the usual stuff you get at DFI supermarkets. They had quite a nice range within the labels though, but by the time I got there the Cumulus (Rolling, Climbing etc), Trentham Estate and Lambloch promoters weren't around for me to try.

The Italian wine counter was small but quality - you could taste everything from Gavi, Moscato to Dolcetto, Barbera d'Alba, Barberesco, Barolo (two of the big B's) to Tuscan blends and Amarone, though I wasn't getting much change - discussion-wise - out of the young Italian dude manning the table. These are the same producers and wines I saw earlier this year at a similar wine fair - Marchese Di Barolo (Piedmonte wines), Castello di Oliveto (Tuscan wines) and Bixio (Amarone), the newest addition being Fantinel, a producer from Friuli (Northeast Italy - near Udinese for football fans). Their offerings were an easy drinking but fine Refosco and a very fragrant Sauvignon. These were from their limited production Sant Helena range, and pretty good value at $34 each.

As I said, the other Italian wines were nothing new, but they were on offer price, with a buy six get one free promotion on at the same time. It was nice to be able to try a single-vineyard Barolo (Cannubi) that retails at a regular price of over 100 bucks. It was on sale here at $80+ but still out of my budget. I can recommend the Barbera d'Alba and Moscato d'Asti wines - the Moscato is my wife's favourite - no surprise there - and though it may be a tad sweet for some, there is a strong fragrance to it, and the fizz and acidity nicely balances it off. It's a very sleek looking bottle as well; dark body with an orange foil over the cork. From what I've seen, the counter seemed popular among the promoters as well, with staff from other counters popping over to try the wines.

Too bad I missed out on the decanter promotion, they were out of stock by the time I went to the cashier.

Any good ripasso and amarone wines to recommend in that fair? when is the fair ending?

Ended yesterday. You can find the same range of wines at Jasons Vivo & Orchard Towers, as well as places like Marketplace Raffles City and 360 at Ion. Not sure if they still have the offers though.

There was a Amarone by Bixio. Quite an interesting wine, rather fruity as old world wines go but constantly developing after you open it, you can taste chocolate, fruit, spice as you revisit it.

Looks like this, though I haven't a clue what she's saying:

Btw I've tried the Tinazzi Valpolicella Ripasso, very nice. Good fruit and acid and sufficient length.

Have you tried the La Gironda Barbera d'Alba? It's on sale on Wine Connection as well at $24.90. Nice wine too.

Do join us for the Italian wine outing if you can, tentatively set at 1 or 2 Oct.

Some other good value Valpolicellas available locally. Don't mind trying, but the cellar is full!
