i found a bunch of videos from Decanter Magazine channel in youtube. Decanter Magazine is the most established wine magazine in the UK and easily one of the most respected and recognized in the world. one of their writers and now contributers, Hugh Johnson, is a walking encyclopedia of wine. (he did collaborate with another sought after british wine expert, Jancis Robinson, to write and publish the definitive Wine Atlas book, the most updated version was 2009)

Hugh Johnson has a tremendous amount of experience and till this day he still gives very insightful and thoughtful advice and opinions of wines. I have great amount of respect for him. These videos look like they were from the 1980s because he looks so young in them, but they're essentially a basic of basics for wine. This is just episode one, you can click on the video to go to the main page and see the other episodes from there. While they may be 'basic', he gives very good insight and it is truly worth the watch; I am learning new things from him too

Description: The color is rich and deep with purply red nuances. The nose is dominated by fresh red fruits with no over ripeness and by toasty notes. The fresh fruit, with a zest of citrus, coats the wood and tar/liquorice aromas. In the palate, the entry is well-structured and ample ; the development remains virile, very generous and remarkably powerfull ; the very long finish offers sweetness without tanic harshness. It’s a typical vintage of the Médoc marrying concentrated elegance and unctuosity whilst preserving the freshness brought by the great cabernets.Robert Parker: Wine Advocate # 181. Feb 2009.

A very strong effort from Lagrange in 2006, this estate’s tendency for including a nearly overwhelming oak component in its wines has been tamed in this cuvee, resulting in a better-balanced, potentially complex offering. Full-bodied and surprisingly powerful for a 2006, with outstanding purity, texture, and depth, patience will be required for this beauty. Drink: 2013 - 2027.

Jancis Robinson: Date tasted : 21-Jan-2010 / Published : 27-Jan-2010. Rather dull deep purple. Very introvert at the moment. Brooding and pretty convincing on the palate. Lots of fruit concentration and very fine, well-managed tannins. No excess of acidity - just extremely inexpressive currently... It did open up in the glass. When to drink : 2016 to 2030.

Wine Spectator: Issue: Mar 31, 2009. Subtle aromas of raspberry and coffee bean follow through to a full body, with refined tannins and a fruity finish. Silky and balanced, even delicate. Not at all overdone. Drink after 21,665 cases made. –JS.

Stephen Tanzer: May/Jun 08. By Stephen Tanzer. (A 59/41 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Bright ruby-red. Pure, vibrant aromas of cassis, flowers and minerals. Juicy and concentrated, with black fruit, mineral and floral flavors complicated by hints of camphor and mint. This dense and rather backward wine spreads out to coat the palate. Finishes with mouth-dusting tannins that will require patience. Despite the substantial merlot component, this comes across as a classic cabernet vintage. Like a more powerful version of the 2007-in fact, says Eynard, we didn't need the petit verdot for structure in 2006.Decanter:

A good sweetness to the fruit too. From a tasting of 2006 Bordeaux at two years of age.

"Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, 90pts -"Bottled in July, a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot (no Petit Verdot), the nose is very closed and sulky. Subdued at the moment with faint notes of blackberry, smoke and pencil lead. With time, more of a sous-bois character emerges. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced with good acidity, a little conservative at first but there is a nice flourish on the second half, quite floral with touches of blueberry inflecting the black fruits and a feminine, cedary finish. Moderate length. This will make a fine medium-term drinking Lagrange. Tasted September 2008.

Hi Guys,

I have a question on German Wine Classification.

If the only thing stated on the bottle is Kabinett or Spatlese is it necessarily a Pradikat? Or do the designations also apply to other "classes"of wine?

i can't find the legrange at the newly opened ntuc finest at serangoon gardens.. any idea which ntuc finest you got it from?

once it mentions kabinett, spatlese and above, it is a Pradikat wine. actually the pradikat should be mentioned on the bottle and usually in very small print.

As long as you see Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerauslese, Eiswein or Trokenbeerauslese, it is definitely a pradikatswein. These sub-categories of Pradikatswein represent ascending order of grape ripeness when they are harvested, but not necessarily an indication of the quality or sweetness of the wine

They also do not apply to other 'lower' classes of German wine like QbA and Tafelwein.

@ikileo: i'm available any day these 2 weeks except the 14th and 21st, both fridays due to work committments. Open air at botak jones is fine considering the weather is so nice and cool these days. Hope it's not raining though.

I've not went hunting for it yet, plan to do so next weekend. I saw the deal in a CNY offer booklet given out by NTUC. If you receive it, it's on the 2nd last page. It states that it's available in the Finest outlets that i frequent (century square, marine parade), so you may want to check those outlets instead.

think they lied..i went to serangoon gardens, 111 @ somerset, century square, marine parade today..don't have..made my gf abit pissed off following me around LOL..
