I wonder, everytime you organise a wine party, do you guys finish all the bottles there and then or bring them back and finish them later?

To begin with, it's quite alot of wine if you add them all together!

Staedtler - 3 words - Know your guests :)

If they r wine geeks, 1:1 ratio is fine. If just casual chit chatters who just want a drink to hold, even 3:1 sometimes got leftover. I ever went w a big group of casual drinkers, brought 3 btls for 8 pax, still brought home 2 btls!

this thread is getting me more excited to visit the Wine shop this weekend.

Was wondering, I alwas remember drinking wine in plastic cups during BBQs. Does it make any difference in taste/smell/etc if we drink from wine glass?

Cool, so many new peeps in the house!
hkm: Think I came across your cellartracker id before, while trying to search for Singaporean ids and what wines they like! Just to let you know that you have been 'stalked'.

I've been listening to Grape Radio podcasts while in the MRT too. Although the American hosts don't know much about non-American wines, it can be a good thing, so they will ask the noob questions most people are afraid to ask.
They also have guests like Jancis Robinson, and various reps from producers like Antinori, Cape Mentelle, Cru Bourgeois Exc etc.

Talking about wine shops, this 1855 bottle shop at Triple One Somerset usually has a tasting every other week. The place is pretty nice, some tables for you to sit and drink behind, and I like the location - accessible via MRT and outside of the ERP zone. And if you buy a bottle of wine, you can redeem for free parking in the evenings.

There was a NZ pinot noir tasting last Friday. I bought a Rockburn, had a nice, intense fruit flavour, but balanced well.

don't mind me if I start to browse through your CT collection...
that's is a quite a bit of wine and lots of bordeaux verticals and top end aussie wines :s12: you must have spent a pretty penny on all of them (Grange, astralis, runrig and other bdx 1st growths!) Now I know who to invite for parties.:s22:

Haha...i will quote you on this. I know the wine store at the Paragon basement (for the life of me I can't remember the name) carries Musar.

can i know how you browse hkm520240's wine collection on cellartracker? do you need his approval to add you as his buddy?

btw, my cellartracker id is mchiew...

Yup I have a wines locker at Extra Space at Boon Keng road. I am about to suggest maybe next time can have a wines session at the tasting room there. It is nice and cosy and we can bring our own food and sternware.

Sure I have read some of your TN fr CT and I will join in the forum too.

Many of my high end bottles are bought from WEA and I believe you should have also purchased wines from them too.

And most of my bottles are purchased through various retail promo. Nowadays special promo and wines fair are everywhere and offer are hard to resist sometimes. :( Like I also picked up the Rouget 2000, Petit Village 2007 (Actually I wanted to grab the '04 but accidentally took the '07, sad :() and Moulin Riche '05 half bottle from the Caveau/Vinum wines fair.

hey hkm520240, u also visited vinum sales at its temp shop? i only grabbed corbin 07 and la gravette certan 06. do you think petit village and moulin riche a good buy?

just go to cellartracker.com
under the search function, set as 'user' and type in the userid of the person you want to search in the box.

click on their inventory and then categorize it by how you want it (colour/country/varietal/vintage ...etc)

you can click on mine too. it's also ikileo.

Yup, I picked Moulin Riche '05 because it is the 2nd label of Château Léoville Poyferré (If I understand correctly, Moulin Riche is actually not the second wines which usually means wines produced from younger vines or barrels that cannot achieve desire Grand Vin quality but from a different plots of vineyard, in this case Pavillon de Poyferré is the 2nd wines of Léoville Poyferré) which is a highly rated super-second left bank Ch and its '05 vintage has impressed me a lot during a blind tasting. So I just want to try if it is good and hence picked up a half bottle and the good thing is the price is just fraction of Léoville Poyferré. No past experience though but my fave is always wines from St Julien AOC. You can always check on CT to see what others say on this wines.

As for Petit Village, as mentioned initially my target is '04 which I felt '04 will be better to drink now with its extra bottle age but it can still be keeping for another 10years or more. I have mix experience with PV and my last tasting on '06 was actually not bad. PV is average or value Pomerol so can't expect more plus the price has reflect this point. The price tag of good Pomerol often exceed $100. I was a bit regret I bought the '07 vintage. I have several tasting experience on '07 and found that generally this is a weaker vintage compare to '05 or even other vintage. The palate usually leaner or diluted with shorter finish. But nevertheless this is an early drinking vintage too meaning it can be drunk earlier than other vintage.

agree w your '07 assessment. been to a '07 tasting, only Cos, Ducru and Montrose are excellent, many pedestrian wines even the big names

Heh, the combination of initials and numbers gave it away, pretty common amongst S'poreans.

Next, when I research on CT for supermarket wines, your name often crops up, especially NTUC ones like Alkoomi, Simi (Californian but sounds so Hokkien), Ashbrook (one of my favs) and stuff available at local wine stores, like Wise Shiraz, Turkey Flat, Two Hands etc.

The age and range of the wines you've consumed, and in your cellar, really makes me green with envy! You've even visited the Greek estate of Argyros!

Anyway thanks for sharing in detail your experiences, very interesting to read from the POV of a S'porean wine noob.

just some info for all y'all, it's good to get a refresher sometimes. A good clear and easy to understand article on how wine is made. Sometimes we are caught up with the hype, the vintage, the varietal, the marketing and points that we sometimes conveniently forget that grape is, in essence, an agricultural product; just like rice, beans, vegetables etc...

like a dinner thing? yeah...we're supposed to have a monthly wine dinner that was started perhaps 3 months ago?

the next one is supposed to be in nov. it's basically BYOB (sometimes BYOG) also :)
typically we'd find places with low to free corkage and set a theme and budget for the wines. so no one brings cheapo stuff while someone brings in uber premium stuff.

So far for the past few ones we've kept it to a $30-$50 range. But once in a while we can do a fancy one just so we can pull out the big guns :)
