Theme: Single Varietal Whites
I brought the 2006 Tablas Creek Roussanne. I may be a bit biased but I really liked it.
Californian sun with with loads of balance and sense.
Food was really good at Jade Palace. One of the guys was a regular so he know what to order. We managed to sit at the private room right at the entrance where their wine storage was.
To start:
NV Egly-Ouriet Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru (Champagne made from 100% Pinot Noir. Easily the best producer in Ambonnay, Champagne)
2010 Domaine de L’Ecu “Taurus”, Muscadet (A dry wine from the Loire made from Melon de Bourgogne grapes, perfect for seafood)
2007 Wagner Stempel “Hollberg” Riesling Trocken GG (classic german riesling from Rheinhessen. GG means Grosses Gewachs or 'Great Growth' meaning a top wine. 2007 was a good vintage in germany)
2010 Domaine de L’Ecu “Granite” Muscadet (same as the previous muscadet. same producer, same vintage, same grape, same region but different terroir shows a HUGE difference in styles and flavour between the 2)
2004 Rene Rostaing Condrieu “La Bonnette” (my first Condrieu. A white wine from Rhone made from 100% Viognier. I've had 100% Viogner from other regions but not Condrieu)
2006 Tablas Creek Roussanne (the only new world wine. From USA. Very good producer and Roussanne as 100% is quite rare as it is typically a blending grape in rhone blends. The Roussanne vines were taken from the famous chatueaneuf-du-pap producer: Chateau de Beaucastel in Southern Rhone. Tablas Creek is a collaboration between Beaucastel and an american producer)
2011 Weingut Huber Malterdinger “Muskateller” (made from Muscat grapes. Easily the best producer in Baden and one of the best in Germany. same grape varietal that goes into your moscato but this is done in a germanic style, more concentration, complex and elegant)
2009 Pierre Amadieu Domaine Grande Romane Cote du Rhone Blanc (100% Clairette from Rhone. Amazing for a 'basic' cotes du rhone blanc. Clairette is usually a blending grape and almost never a 100%. delicious with brilliant acidity)
2010 Vignetia Massa, Derthona Costa del Vento (100% Timorasso from Piedmonte. Never had this before but very interesting and tasty wine)
To Finsh
2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey (not a 100% varietal but just to end. a very good producer in a very good year. it was actually quite pop and pour which was a shame cos it was still very young and can easily open up a lot more; but incredibly delicious)
for those who wanna know more, you can easily google/wiki any of the grapes or terms or regions/ or can ask me. do try new wines and new producers and expand your white wine beyond chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. there's a complex and delicious world out there.
