Tried the 2012 Dönnhoff Riesling today. Quite like it, feel very pure and easy on the palate. Light but flavorful. Not sure if my nose is playing trick, beside the fruity aroma, towards the end, there seems to be a little bit of petrol note in it as well.

which Donnhoff is this? anything else on the label? you got it from Isetan?

they are one of the top producers in germany and from the Nahe region.

Rieslings is something magical because it is one of the grape varietals that really expresses the soil and micro-climate it is grown in; hence the varied expressions of riesling.

the can age very well (depend on the producer, vintage and quality) up to several decades for some. if u ever have the opportunity to taste aged german rieslings, i would high recommend that you jump at that chance.

with a good producer they are very 'pure' and have great clarity and precision in their youth. while they are easy on the palate, do take the time to savour that purity that is not easily found in other white wines elsewhere. with time that flavour will grow in complexity to something incredible.

top german rieslings are still considered 'underpriced' compared to other premium wines like in burgundy and bordeaux. german rieslings give you, arguably, the best wine world class wine experience for the least amount of money compared to other types of wines of similar quality.

the riesling rack in Isetan is very good with a side selection of very good producers from different regions. take your time to savour and try then all as well as research each one.

Hi fellow wine drinkers/investors,

I am kinda stuck with 6x 75cl PENFOLD GRANGE (2003). Bought these as investments about 5 years back during the Universal Asset Management scam. Not sure if you guys heard about it..

Due to the recent and rather hefty increase in storage fee of a rather unscrupulous wine storage company, i'm looking to urgently offload these wines. Believe duties isn't paid yet.

Can anybody advise what should I do? Many thanks in advance..

finally discovered this thread! took me long enough :<. Was spurred on ytd after some thread in EDMW reminded me of a great red I had quite long ago.

im starting out on my own half-assed wine journey (partly cos im gonna live in Europe again for 5 mths next yr and will be doing my rounds in France) as I just love the taste of reds.

Read up on the 1st post and all, still hard for me to taste/smell the difference but thanks to my trusty Vivino app they did a profile on me and apparently I'm more inclined to reds from the left bank of bordeaux. So in that case, how should I move on from here? Stick to drinking the great cab savs from bdx to increase my knowledge?

Dear Orionhan,

Basically, you have 3 options: 1. Drink them, 2. Sell them, 3. Look for alternative storage.

If you want to drink them, look for special occasions; Grange (2003) maybe a bit young to be drank now, so give it a good decant before you consume them.

If you want to sell them off, you may contact the wine merchants in Singapore. Some of them are looking to buy investment wines, so that might be an option for you to get the wines off your hands.

If you are looking for alternative storage, there are plenty of options: Extra Space, Store Friendly, etc

Either way, you have to pay up the storage fees due to them and also the alcohol taxes in order to retrieve the wines.

Good luck!

Purely my opinion: dude its only half a case. Drink one every other year for special occasions.

Do u collect other wines? If not buy a small wine to store them. It will save u on the long run.

Of course if u bought it purely for investment then u have to find a wine broker or something. Some retailers and importers do buy branded wines; assuming perfect storage condition.

The HWZ Wine Group had their monthly wine dinner last night at Imperial Treasure Cantonese Cuisine at Great World City.

Theme: 10 Year Old Wines - 2004 Vintage.

Good spread of regions and varieties. Most of these 2004 wines, in my opinion, were still young and still have lots of room for development. This really says a lot about how many of us drink our wines too young.

Letting them age longer gives them more room for development and complexity for most wines.

20141031_210216_zpslvbdoi6s.jpg
As usual they were all served blind. People voted and then the wines were revealed one by one at the end.

20141031_213611_zpslenihyob.jpg
The surprise is that there some wines that were identical.
Wines 2 & 4 were the same wines while 3 & 6 were another set of identical bottles.

While similar they still tasted different! This also shows how much bottle variation plays a part and also how much decanting affects the wines because some wines were decanted while others were not.

Year 2004 Wines Served

1) Clos Martinet, Priorat, Spain (Garnacha, Carinena, Syrah)

2) Bannockburn "The Estate" Shiraz, Geelong, Australia (Shiraz)

3) Chateau Sociando-Mallet, Bordeaux, France (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc)

4) Bannockburn "The Estate" Shiraz, Geelong, Australia (Shiraz)

5) La Colombina Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy (Sangiovese)

6) Chateau Sociando-Mallet, Bordeaux, France (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc)

7) Balnaves "The Tally" Reserve, Coonawarra, Australia (Cabernet Sauvignon)

8) La Rioja Alta "Vina Ardanza Reserva", Rioja, Spain (Tempranillo, Garnacha)

9) Cullen "Diana Madeline" Margaret River, Australia (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc)

10) James Irvine "Grand Merlot", Eden Valley, Australia (Merlot)

11) Lanciola "Le Masse di Greve" Chianti Classico Reserva (Sangiovese)

Coravin

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I've used HWZ Forums. Reactivated my account after finding this thread.

Have any of you used the Coravin wine preservation system before? It looks like a pretty cool invention, especially since I can't finish anywhere near half a bottle by myself.

wow! thanks for reactivating! welcome back.

I've not used the Coravin system but i've read up quite a bit about it.
It is a hefty investment and IMO it's more for people to taste bottles that are meant to lie down for many years to get a sense of where they are.

also there were a handful of cases of bottles exploding earlier this year whereby CORAVIN had to do a recall and thereafter their advice was after re-releasing the product was to have the bottles covered in neoprene sleeves.

You can read up the many articles on the Coravin. It's a good invention to test these fancy bottles in their youth but for casual wines and casual drinking it may be an over-investment. Plus their effects on the wine is still inconsistent.

i would rather you buy half-bottles or share bottles with friends over a longer dinner. It's ok if you can't finish; pour out what you think is good for you, recork and put it in the fridge. A good bottle of wine can be kept for 1-2 days like this. And in my experiences most actually taste better (assuming it was a good bottle) after slowly oxidizing/breathing in the re-sealed bottle.

hope this helps! here are more articles from reputed food/wine sites
